Tape Is Cool
I just got back from the NAB conference.
It was the first time that I have been exposed to any of our StorageTek
products. And I found out that tape is pretty cool.
There are a few reasons for this. First, the technology is pretty
amazing. Check out the specs on the href="http://www.storagetek.com/products/product_page560.html">SL8500.
90 Petabytes of capacity. Throughput of 265 Terabytes an
hour. And, some of the coolest robotics technology I've seen in a
piece of IT hardware. Be sure to check out the Product Tour on href="http://www.storagetek.com/products/product_page560.html">this
page to appreciate the technology wonder that this is.
Another thing I found out is that cool customers buy tape. All
the major movie studios and a vast array of broadcasters buy tape
storage products. They all need to ensure that their most
valuable assets (all the content) are safely archived, but also
available in fairly short order. I was even amazed at how quickly
content can be picked up from these massive storage libraries.
Tape has opened up new doors for us. There are many customers who
have deployed StorageTek solutions that have not been exposed to our
other products and services, and they are more than happy to hear about
what we have. We truly have a product line now that spans the
entire lifecycle of a piece of digital content - from inception to
archive. If there was any doubt that everything is digital now,
NAB was the proof. Every inch of the Las Vegas convension center
packed with everything needed to create, package, deploy, and archive
all forms of digital content - for big and small content creators alike.
Finally, tape is cool because of the people. I got to meet the
sales and technical folks that focus on StorageTek products for the
media and entertainment industry, and they are just great people.
They are passionate about the M&E industry and about all the great
produts we have. They are also just fun to hang out with.
I didn't have much of an opinion when we brought on the StorageTek
products, but now I can say that it was a great move. Now I
firmly believe that Tape Is Cool.
