Blogging on my Palm TX

Saturday May 06, 2006

I recently got a new Palm TX PDA and hooked it up to my new Samsung A900 cell phone. The PDA has a good browser on it -- that is for a PDA -- so I'm using it to write this entry. It's a bit awkward to write using Graffiti again after getting used to using a PDA with a keyboard (a Treo 600) but it's OK. I hope to post more later.

Hi - I just got a new Palm TX and A900 as well but I haven't been able to get my pda to use my phone as a modem. Can you please help??

Well, it doesn't work for me either now. I called Sprint and they say that I now need to pay an additional $40 per month for a "phone as modem" plan. That's a bit steep for me. I'm not very happy with Sprint lately. I signed up with them about 2 or 3 years ago and my contract expired so I renewed with a new 2 year contract, but it seems that their customer service has gotten worse lately and they seem to use a bait and switch tactic where they advertise one thing and then sell you something else that's more expensive. :-( I've spent more time on the phone and in stores arguing about my bill. I would rather have switched to another carrier and paid a little more rather than go through all the hassle, but now I'm locked into a 2 year contract. The other reason I signed up with them is because I got cell phones for my parents and I knew that Sprint had good coverage for them. Sigh.

In any case, to answer your question more directly. Palm TX supports GSM phones but not the CDMA Sprint phones yet. However, my partner did some googling and found an article on "howardforums" IIRC that had info on how to use an Samsung A900. Instead of adding a phone, there is a way to add it as a modem, I think. However, as I said above, I was able to get this to work last month, but it no longer works. I live in Mountain View, CA, BTW which is in the San Francisco Bay Area in Silicon Valley. When it was working, the speed was great.

Sorry for the slow response, I was at JavaOne during the week when you posted your question.

The Palm TX has a great keyboard for only $50.

Sprint charged too much for use of my Palm/TX on my cell phone. My current cell phone is an iPhone -- my current favorite gadget. Check out http://blogs.sun.com/edwingo/entry/buying_current_tune_at_starbuck.

BTW, I don't use my Palm/TX anymore. It has a broken on/off switch but it's still usable. You turn it on by pressing a button and turn it off by waiting :-). I'll give it away to anyone who wants it for free, but the problem is getting it to them.

I have spliced two hotsync cables together: my palm TX cable
and a palm Treo 600 hotsync and charge cable (the female part)
I am attempting to use the Treo 600 portable keyboard with my TX.
so far good splice, driver issue I think? any suggestions

The Treo 600 was two cell phones ago :-). My current phone/PDA is an iPhone. Overall, I've been pretty happy with it even though it doesn't have a physical keyboard.
