Doing the Remote Work Thang - Redux
Over three years ago, I posted of my home office setup... much change in the interim, and thought it might be interesting to document the differences...
| August 2004 | October 2007 | |
| Desktop | Sun Ultra80 SPARC workstation running Solaris 9 update 6 | Shuttle SK83G AMD64 workstation running OpenSolaris NV73 |
| Laptop | Toshiba Tecra 9100 running Sun JDS rev 2 | Toshiba Tecra M2 running OpenSolaris NV73 |
| Printer | Lexmark Z51 inkjet (via CUPS) | HP DeskJet 6980 wireless inkjet (via CUPS) |
| Internet Connection | ADSL @ 380K/165K - $80/mon | Cable broadband @ 10M/300K - $45/mon |
| Phone | 2-line 900 MHz wireless | 2-line 2.4 GHz wireless |
And what have we learned here?...
- Yes, most everything is cheaper and faster
- Solaris is completely usable as a day-to-day desktop
- Sun has been great at continuing to support my remoteness, including but not limited to subsidizing most of this equipment
