I filled the gas tank of my car yesterday at $4.09 per gallon at Costco in the morning. On the way home the price had jumped to $4.15! This is offically the highest cost per gallon I've ever spent on gas.

So how much has the increase in fuel prices affected my driving costs? I typically get 22 to 23 miles per gallon in my Mazda 6. This is just over 18 cents per mile. My commute to and from work is 66 miles total. I drive in only 3 days per week and work the other 2 days at home. This makes my monthly cost of just gas to drive to and from work now $156 (roughly $12 per trip). If I go to working 3 days a week at home I'll save over $50 per month. Not to mention the decrease in CO2 emissions.

Unfortunately, with my kids out of school, sometimes working from home can be a bit challenging. Fortunately, I have a co-worker who I can carpool with during the non-school months, so it looks like I will be in the office 3-4 days per week this summer and only driving half that time.

Comments:

Stop your complaining. In Australia we are paying $1.50-60 cents a litre, which works out to be over $6 a gallon.

Still think your 'gas' is expensive?
