Vidiator & Sun have jointly developed an impressive integrated video streaming solution for TV, Mobile & Desktop and it's a win-win for everyone.
1. Service Providers can now deliver the highest quality
video experience to consumers.
2. Network operators can now offer the same video content on a variety of screens, TV, desktop and mobile.
3. Consumers get everything they ever wanted: top quality video that they can access however they like, whenever they want, wherever they are.
The secret to the success has been the bringing together
of Vidiator's award-winning Xenon mobile video encoding and streaming solution
and Sun's leading IPTV technology.

I remember a few years ago an initiative from Sun on the SetTop Boxes and also Sun had an even better solution in the streaming video servers....
- Where are these solutions today ?
- Why did Sun stop them ?
- Why should a customer believe that it's going to stay longer now?
What is different now ? or is it yet another...
Again, Sun does not understand the business model here.
This solution is great but not enough to really monetize the technology behind.
What Sun should do is:
- Enter the business if content delivery.
- Build infrastructures that support video services and resell that to end customers, and ISPs, Telcos.
- Enter the advertisment business and really make money.
But Sun cannot do that, it did not with J2ME and it will not with video.
Someone will do it. Like Apple...or Oracle...
note: There is nothing personal at all my remarks.
Only facts and reality, I was a Sun supporter.

Andy,
As always, I welcome your comments on my blog posts. Thanks for keeping it interesting and thanks for the opportunity to respond.
You seem familiar with Sun Microsystems and our past products and proof of concepts.
Because of that you must also know that we are very committed to building a strong foundation of technology for our customers and partners. And at Sun, partnering is in our DNA.
I'm sure you understand that apart from our extensive footprint with Java in such things as phones, blue-ray, gaming consoles and so on, we do not play in the consumer space, we never have at Sun. We are very focused on working with partners and providing them with the best technologies to build their solutions for our customers. Again, partnering is in our DNA.
You may be familiar with the project formally known as 'StreamStar'? Now the 'Sun Streaming System'*, a high-end streaming system that was focused on centralized IP video distribution, the first of its kind being designed for Unicast business models, representing our view of the future. Sun Streaming Systems is evolving and today represents the only line of streaming products that scales seamlessly from hundreds of IP video streams to millions, centralized, peripheral or hybrid content distribution and streaming.
Over the last few years we have focused on taking our core streaming technology and scaling to suit emerging business models**, we have also partnered with other companies and have seen growing success. Keep watching this space, the final chapter has not yet been written.
Sun has always, and continues to focus on the success of its partners such as our community of senior customers (Media Advisory Board) and ISVs (Independent Software Vendors) and our deep relationships with our global NEPs (Network Equipment Providers) and Service Providers. See IPTV 2009 Partner Catalog.***
150 of the top media companies in the world use our technology. Many of the largest players in advertising solutions space use our technology from databases to servers to storage. Do we work with global NEPs (Network Equipment Providers) and Service Providers? Yes. Sun is the recognized industry segment leader and we enjoy growth better than average CAGR.
Why should customers believe that our solutions will stay? Because if they make money, and the market keeps wanting those solutions, we will keep building them. And if the marketplace changes and new opportunities emerge, you can be sure we'll be there too. After all, that's what innovation is all about. Our customers keep telling us that they want innovation from Sun.
Cheers, Darrell

Darrell,
I appreciate your answer and will certainly be looking very closely at the future of your new streaming solution.
Having said that, I strongly believe that being out of the consumer market is a big mistake. Building a strong brand implies consumer market. Consumer market implies huge revenue opportunities beyond the "shrinking margin" server market...
If look backward 8 years feedback from the J2ME experience, Sun made very little money with this technology...and history just repeats...you should learn from what happened and make corrective actions...get out of your boxes and think different !!!
