Project 9: Passion we need

Be honest, I always feel hard to figure out an attractive topic and write down something for it. Be honest again, lazy is another reason. Starting to write down the material after lunch, it took me two hours. Then, I took one hour to prepare for it. That is not a good habits.

Anyway, I enjoy delivering in front of audience. I like this kind of feeling like a teacher or an actor. Here is the speech, hope you like it.

Do you think what is the most primary and critical element to make up a success? A persistent success. You could have started to count in your mind. Talent, education, chance, money, relationship, communication, coordination and organization skills and so on. This list can be expanded longer.

But what is the key element? (Long pause) IMO, it is PASSION.

No high talent, we can work hard. No good education, we can self-study. No chance, we can create it. No money, we can earn it. No good skills, we can practice. But, without passion, your failure is written at the starting line.

Without passion, a painter has advanced skills is just called artisan,  in stead of artist. Without passion, a wonderful job just become to a way to get salary. Without passion, you have lost your life, no matter how rich you are.

You could have heard the story of Chen Jingrun, the great mathematician. He spend his spare time to investigate Goldbach Conjecture and made a breakthrough. However, do you know how rough his living and working environment? Only a six square meters room. The only he hold are the pencil, paper, knowledge and his passion for math. The passion support him to overcome all the problem. External environment is an important part, but it is not the critical point. The critical one must be something in our mind. It must be something you want from your heart. It a strong felling. It is a strong desire. That is passion.

If you think this example is far from us, we also can find the similar example around us. Even, in Toastmaster Club. Lendan transfered from an art student to a science student successfully. How hard for him at that time, how much knowledge need to grasp and how much time he have to spend, we can image it. Finally, he succeeded and was recognized by this famous IT company. What could have given Lendan the strength to defy all odds. It is passion. Passion is the fuel that propels the rocket.

As also, passion is the catalyst for the other components. It give you the energy to burn the oil and wrote down 100 love poems for your girlfriend one night. It let you knit the sweater in one day don't fell tire. It let you feel warm, even you have stayed outdoor and wait your lover over three hours with wind and snow.

We alway run into various choice, difficulties, even failure. Passion is like a light that will guide us out of darkness. No matter how hard it is, how long it is, how painful it is, holding your passion you will hold the future!

Project 7: Environmental Conservation in Our Office

  About half year ago, I saw a post in the pantry and it said ERI paid 2 milions RMB for
power in BJS05 last year. That is much more than I expected. I was
surprised. The project 7 is Research your Topic. They are match, so I
pick up this topic.

 Environmental protection is not far from us.

 
First of all, let me ask a question. According to your estimation, do
you think how much we paid for electricity in last year? Only Floor 7
BJS05? (Pause) It is about 2,000,000 RMB. Were you aware of that
before? I was not conscious of this situation until I saw the posting
in the pantry.

  Currently, China is stepping into a brand-new
developing phase. The country and people is getting richer and richer.
Business and individual cars flood in the street. Our house are full of
all kinds of electrical appliances. Tons of oil, coal, electricity and
natural gas consumed in every day. Everybody are looking forward to
happy and nice life, but too much resource consumption will destroy the
nature. More vehicle lead to more gasoline consumption. More electrical
appliances means more coal consumption. Eventually, all of those cause
more green house gas emissions.

  Even books lead to
deforestation. China has 220 million students in schools of all types.
If we assume that one student uses 15 textbooks per school year, that
means Chinese students will use more than 3 billion textbooks every
year. As the newspaper say our goal is to build up a
resource-conserving, environment-friendly society. Hence, we have to
change for it. A new item - "the nation encourages the reuse of
textbooks" - has been added to the revised Compulsory Education Law,
effective last September. If each book costs 15 yuan, we could save
more than 45 billion yuan by reusing those 3 billion textbooks for one
school year. That is equivalent to 550,000 tons of paper, or about 11
million trees.

  Can you image only book reused can save so much money and natural resource. Unimaginable. Right? But, that is the fact.

 
Environmental conservation is not only for the government or
organizations, also for every individuals. What we can do in our daily
work? What is the resource consumption problem for the company like Sun?

 
Dave Douglas, vice president for eco-responsibility at Sun said, "We're
not only part of the solution, but also part of the problem," he
confesses. What he means is that computers are egregious energy hogs.
Data centers alone, Sun calculates, account for 2-3 percent of total
world energy use, with all IT making up more like 4-5 percent. At big
companies, 20 percent of total energy costs can typically be accounted
for by information technology.

  In addition, I did a statistics
to see how many people power off their desktop machines when they left
the office.(Pause) Less than half. Say, we are wasting tons of
electricity resource for nothing. We really need do something, from now
on. What we can do in our daily office life?

  * Power off your desktop when you left in the afternoon or weekend.
  * Identify and turn off unused equipment in your labs and data center.
  * Turn off your monitor when you leave for lunch
  * Setting your computer to power save mode.

  You could suspect for those tiny steps. Is it really helpful? Yes.

 
Let's look back to the number we mentioned in the very beginning. If we
have 5% saving, say 100,000 Yuan, in electricity at floor 7, what
happened? It is equivalent to :
  * 17 passenger cars not driving for one year
  * provide electricity for 12 families for one year
  * reducing our green house gas emissions by 90 tones.
  * half acres of forest preserved from deforestation

  Everyone's tiny contribution could cause a huge miracle. A penny saved is a penny earned. Don't hesitate. Let's move, now.

10个月娃娃玩吊环

一晃眼，那个襁褓中的小家伙，已经可以驾着学步车满屋子乱窜了。两个月不见，学会不少东西，孩子的学习能力真的很强，看着大人打电话，然后自己也拿起手机放在脑袋侧面，只是不明白该放在什么位置。常常是脑袋顶，抑或是后脑勺。爱玩，爱爬，爱运动。跷跷板要翘，秋千要甩得高，最爱的是吊环。

10个月的娃娃玩吊环，你见过么？那姿势，堪比吊环王！

有没有发现，腹肌很强，腿提的很直？嗯，很有他老爸当年风采！

一场足球比赛

    上次去林大，已经是整整五年前的事情了。那时刚来到北京不久，住在二里庄，和宿舍老大一起去林大的英语角。那时林大的英语角很小，而且不是大家自发而成的，所以人很少。去过几次之后就再也没有去过，过来过去就那么几个人，聊来聊去也没有什么新鲜劲。虽然一直住的离的不算远，但一直也没有再去过那个校园。

    不想再次来到这里，已经是五年后了。林大还是挺不错的，尤其喜欢它那有高大的树木所遮掩的入门大道。一路小跑，去球场找组织。远远的看见红星的艳红球衣和Sun Blue，想想前两场比赛，我们以少打多，再加上一点点运气，竟连他们赢两场，红星的不服气是可以想象的，一场恶战看来不可避免。不知组委会怎么安排的，这已经是我们跟红星的第三场小组赛了。莫不是踢三循环？

    人比上一次来的多， 看来大家可以轮换着上场，不至于完全没有替补而体力透支。红星继承了他们上场比赛的特点，一上来就是三板斧，依靠开场体力充沛的特点，竟然二十分钟连入两球。而Sun这边有点蒙，感觉都没有进入比赛状态。还好，很快这边就获得一个点球，可惜的是竟然被扑了出来。场下的我们，一个个长吁短叹，扼腕惋惜。然而，就在大家有点急躁之时，只见我方一名前场悍将，踢出一脚犹如巴斯滕当年一般的，右脚零角度射门。全场都惊呆了，不知是谁，只见一个比巴斯滕矮一头，胖一圈，黑一层的，幸福的冲出人群，大家惊呼：老蔡！

    下半场我替补Vincent出任右边后卫，对方的前锋站在我与中后卫中间，而我们由于下半场又被进了一个，局势比较被动，撤下一个后卫，打三后卫。所以，我需要顾及他们这个前锋，还有右前卫。我比较担心他们突进然后分边，而我的担心很快就成了事实，对方看到我们后卫比较少，三四个前场一起冲击，只见一脚射门从门前划过，速度并不快，守门员可能是想放出底线，不想那球在落地后向边上游走，我立马冲向前拦截，不想冲击的太猛，整个人都冲到界外，眼看脸要撞到旁边的栏杆上，一偏头整个脖子和耳根与那铁栏杆，的来了个第一次的亲密接触。当时的感觉，就像脖子被人重重的砍了一棍子。不幸中的万幸是，没有伤到骨头。而更让人遗憾的是，那球还是让他进了。

    最终2:4，我们输掉了这场比赛。对于我来说，好的是体力慢慢的有所恢复，不像第一场那样累了；坏的是又有受伤。回去的一路上，总在想，难道真的如电视上所报道的，27岁是个分水岭，在这之前不太容易受伤，即使受伤也很容易恢复；而27岁之后就刚好相反，容易受伤且恢复的慢。

    27岁那年我在做什么呢？

ERI 6岁了

    三年前当我刚刚进入Sun的时候，适逢ERI度过她的第三个生日。很遗憾，就差几天没有赶上三周年庆典，但可以想象身在其中的每个人，在那一刻的欣喜与对未来的憧憬！逝者如斯夫，不舍昼夜！在不经意之间，在每日的忙碌之间，在敲动键盘的指尖，时间犹如白驹过隙，又三个年头过去了。

    我依旧清晰的记得刚入司的那段日子，依旧记得当Lucy问我加入Sun多长时间时，那一刻惊喜的发现，那一天正好是入公司半年，一天都不差。记忆的刻度随着时间流逝而逐渐被拉长，随后的记忆是一年两年，直至三年后的今天。而其中的缝隙被琐碎的事情所占据，竟理不出其中的思绪。人的记忆有时候是这样的奇怪，若干年前的陈事，犹如破碎的磁片，常常会被从记忆的储藏室中捡出来，然后分毫不差的拼接好，重新放在展柜上。而不久之前的经历，却如拆散的拼图，怎么都还原不了当初的边边角角。

    妈常说一句话：好记性不如烂笔杆。写日记是一个不错的选择，虽然总有缺失，但毕竟是对那时的还原。回来的路上，得知很多不认识或者不熟悉的人，他们虽然不认识我，但却常常看我的博客，一说到这让我倍感惭愧。自己常常是三五周都不曾更新一些，真是有些辜负他人的关注。

    今天是ERI的好日子，借着这个机会，在这里胡乱涂鸦几下，也算是稍稍平缓一下自己惭愧的心境。

好运北京

        汽车是为了让人们出行更方便，但车太多了，拥挤的交通，反倒让出行变的困难。尤其遇到个大雨，大雪，大雾天，密密麻麻的车在北京大大小小的路上挤作一团，烦躁的喇叭声更是给急躁的心情火上浇油。明年的这个时候就是奥运会，为了检测车辆对北京空气污染指数的影响，从17号起到20号，所有车辆分单双号出行。

        一早出来就发现四环上的车跑的更快一些了，因为车少了。到车站没有一会儿功夫656就到了，可以想象小营亚运村那边不堵，车子很快就能从望京开过来。一路走着注意看出行的车牌，大家都很自觉一路上除了出租车，一眼眼看到的都是单号。志新桥下往往是一路上第一个“堵点”，从八达岭上下来的车往中关村方向，过了建翔桥就在这儿慢下来，往常的经验是两个灯，今天就比较快了，一个灯就轻轻松松的过去了。车穿过十字时，扭头看了一眼横向停着的车辆，排队等行的大概不超过10排，一个灯就应该可以过去的数量。车子很快行到了学院桥，走辅路从桥下绕过，横向并道的车也比往常少，所以很顺利就拐了过来到了科大西门。驶向下一个路口左转，前面竟然一个车都没有，只等绿灯亮起，司机一个油门便冲了出去。

       往常从家坐车到公司大约得40分钟，而从城府路到五道口这两站就要花25分钟左右，路比较窄人又比较多，从语言学院十字到五道口十字大约一百米的路程有两个十字一个火车道一个城铁站，再有一堆堆的黑车，那拥堵是可想而知的。即使车少了，我对这段行程也不报太多奢望。情况还是要好多了，大约5分钟就从成铁站下过来了。等下了车，掏出表一看从上车到下车也就20分钟，这比平常整整节约了一半的时间。

        初来北京的人都有一个概括，路宽！是啊，北京的路不可谓不宽，单向4车道的路面比比皆是，全封闭，全程高速的环线也是一个又一个，可路再多也架不住车多啊。据说，北京现在一天放一千个号，也就是一年就多三四十万辆车，这是个什么概念？能不拥堵么？可是如果不能把公共交通做好，只是一味的提高购车养车的成本，犹如对江河的治理，只是堵截而不是疏通。

        生活在北京，自然希望北京的交通越来越好，公共交通越来越发达，出行越来越方便。祝北京好运，好运北京！

Sun又一次升起！

        经过漫长的五年，Sun在这个财季一举扭亏为盈，实现了1.26亿美金的收益，合每股3美分。除此之外，对Sun来说还有两个利好消息。

        一是，Sun和Intel结成联盟，将开始生产出售基于Intel芯片的X86服务器。而从前Sun只出售只基于AMD芯片的X86服务器，也就是Sun Fire系列服务器。这一次和Intel的联盟，又一次扩大Sun的产品线，为客户提供了更多的选择。这样以来，Sun的产品线，从SPARC平台到X86平台，从基于AMD芯片的到基于Intel的，从低端，中端到高端，从服务器到存储，从操作系统到中间件，从软件到服务，从开发源代码到纯商业软件，Sun都拥有。在IT这个行业，能过做到包括所有这些产品和服务的公司，只有寥寥可数的几家。IBM算一个，HP算一个。

       二是，私有股权收购基金Kohlberg Kravis Roberts（KKR）将对Sun进行7亿美元的投资。
