Sand Animation Art ... in Artistry
"Ilana draws on sand, using only her fingers. As she weaves together sand, lighting and music, Ilana creates incredible three dimensional vistas they play out in perfect time with the musical accompaniment, Indeed, it is difficult to decide if the music accompanies the work of art, or vice versa Ilana's fingers dance in the sand on the glass to the music, the resulting aesthetic dynamic is powerful and moving."
It is truly fascinating to watch. It's amazing that she can manipulate sand so well. (via Drawn!)

Amazing Sidewalk Art ... in Artistry
Julian Beever and Kurt Wenner are artists who create 3D chalk drawings on pavement using a technique called anamorphism (a distorted projection or perspective; especially an image distorted in such a way that it becomes visible only when viewed in a special manner) that creates the illusion, or Trompe-l'oeil.

Dragon: A Commercial & CG Water ... in Artistry
Dragon is an amazing commercial for United Airlines. The story is the visualization of a child imagining what his father does at work. Hand cut-out paper characters are wonderfully animated using the stop-motion technique (can you say labor intensive?) It was directed by Jamie Caliri, who did the closing credit sequence for Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events. United Airlines has the commercial as well as a making-of documentary (also very cool) on their site.
And now for something mechanical. Think you've seen good computer-generated water? Then you should check out Flowline's demo reel. What's really impressive is that the clip is rendered in one pass and there's no compositing. Oh and the shark is pretty cool as well.

Mirrormask ... in Artistry
I've been a huge fan of Dave McKean ever since I discovered him through the Sandman comics. What's that you say? Who's that? Then maybe you might know his album cover art - I have the artwork for Toad The Wet Sprocket's Coil hanging in my office. And if you need more - you can check out a nice article on him over at the Apple site.
With that being said, I've been anxious for the release of Mirromask, especially after watching the trailer. The Jim Henson Company are also in the mix, how cooler can it get? Oh I know, thrown in the fact that Neil Gaiman wrote the story. You might think "freaky" - but I'm going with dark, disturbing and delicious.

Shiqikongqiao - I dreamed of China ... in Artistry
This picture - which you probably would swear is a 3D rendering - captivated me. I closed my eyes, and dreamt of China.
Here's the description:
"Shiqikongqiao ( Seventeen Arches Bridge ) crosses the water with a graceful curved design,
linking Nanhudao with the mainland at the Summer Palace's Kunming lake in Beijing,
The bridge has a handrail with some 500 stone carved lions and other exotic creatures."

After the Harvest ... in Artistry
The hues of blue and gold in "After the Harvest" remind me of Provence. Clouds racing to blot out the sun, fields shimmering in gold as they ache for the daylight, shadows threaten to overtake all.
