The Beauty of the Internet ... in Artistry

While waiting for my in-laws from Hawaii to arrive for the holidays, I did some research on the favicon. I knew what is was and what is was used for, but I wasn't entirely clear on how to actually make one. So I flexed my fingers and employed my google-fu. My first distraction was the Favicon inspiration gallery - 401 favicons to get your creative juices flowing. For a giggle scroll down to bottom of the page and read a rather wise saying.

The next cool distraction was the discovery of a Photoshop blog - jackpot! I've been using Photoshop since 2.5, and I'm always on the lookout for tips, tidbits and tricks.

So while reading through the Photoshop blog, I came across and entry for "Three Sisters" - which is an exhibit of photos taken of three ships from the Polish steamship line - Iryda, Isolda, and the Ziema Gnieznienska. Not very interesting you say, well then how about this description: "Photographed mostly in dawn morning light, the colors dance with intensity in juxtaposition to the glassy calm water, clear blue sky, and the calmness of a city not yet awoken." I was stunned - these photos are absolutely amazing. Here's another quote from the Photoshop blog that I totally agreed with: "One of the interesting aspects of the photos is that they remind us of Photoshop effects people strive for. And so it is nice to see a photo that looks Photoshopped but that in fact is not Photoshopped. Photos that are perfectly mysterious and beautiful without any effects."

So distractions such as these is why I love the internet. These "wow" moments- unexpected but warmly welcomed.

3D Animation ... in Artistry

One of my interests is 3D animation - something I picked up when I was the managing artist for a game. A couple of years ago I discovered Rustboy - a 3D film done entirely by one person. Amazing, simply amazing. So that lead me on a quest for more. Then I discovered Robota by Doug Chiang. Doug worked on this in his spare time. His real job was Creative Director for ILM. I have the books from both of these projects.

There's a ton of links to other projects in this thread on the Rustboy discussion forum. One that caught my eye is a Dutch project - Geweldenaren Van Ver (Tyrants From Afar). Supposedly done in two weeks!
