China Web 2.0 Review ... in Kewl
China Web2.0 Review is a blog dedicated to tracking and profiling the Web 2.0 development in China. Their latest article is an interview with Edwyn Chan. He is the founder of Blogku Media, the first blog network in China. Intriguing, because my first reaction was "blog network in China? No way!"

Pbase.com ... in Kewl
I have my photo gallery over at Pbase.com. I really like being able to just upload a zip file and have the site process my images and create all the thumbnails. One major con though is that the site tends to be slow. But now they are upgrading their hardware, and they've posted photos of their new machines. Yep, that's right, Sun boxes. And I'm not talking about some 1U boxes, but a Sun Fire V890. Very sexy!

Skyscrapers ... in Kewl
[Image is from the 33 World Buildings Poster available at skyscaper.com]
If you're into architecture and big buildings, then skyscraperpage.com is a freakin' awesome site. If you check out the buildings that are proposed or under construction, you will find some absolutely fabulous buildings. In particular I really dig the Fordham Spire, Abraj Al Bait Towers and the Federation Tower.
Their search form is pretty nifty as well.

Guy Kawasaki Enters The Blogosphere ... in Kewl
Looks like Guy Kawasaki is now blogging. He has entries such as "How to Kick Butt On a Panel", "How to Get a Standing Ovation" and "The Venture Capitalist Wishlist." Good stuff. And it looks like he's kamaaina. You know, da kine. So Aloha! (throws Guy a shaka)
(If anyone knows where I can find a decent shaka emoticon, let me know!)
Extra: In the course of searching for a good definition of kamaaina, I came across "Going Native on Oahu." It's a great article on life in Oahu.

One Free Minute ... in Kewl
What would you say, given one free minute of anonymous, uncensored speech? A very cool idea indeed. I highly recommend watching the video - the setting up part is intriguing onto itself. The first call grabs your attention: ""I have cancer ... and cancer sucks"
I had a vision that this would take the place of the raving lunatics that spout obcenities and other random interjections at no one particular in the Tenderloin. Welcome to modern world, where you too can be a madman without the being revealed as such. But on the other hand, you could be brilliant, and profoundly impact a stranger with words that snuck out the back door of your heart.
So, what would you say?

California State Parks go Wireless ... in Kewl
Reading through the my latest issue of Sunset magazine, I caught a small article on the plan to bring Wi-Fi to the California State Park system. Initially this struck me as a tad bit odd, after all the purpose of going to park is to enjoy nature and forget about tapping keys and firing off emails. But then I thought, well, this is California after all.

Let's Talk About Star Wars ... in Kewl
With the pending release of Star Wars (Episode III): Revenge of the Sith (review), there's been plenty of hype in the media. Here's a few stories and other related items I picked out:
- Anakin vs. Luke, nature vs. nurture: Was Darth born bad?
An examination of why Anakin went bad.
- That dark side of Darth Vader cuts across generations
Chicks dig the Vader.
- The Art of Ralph McQuarrie
Best known for his unforgettable work on the Star Wars trilogy. The website has conceptual drawings and designs, all taken directly from Ralph McQuarrie's personal archives.
- The Darth Side: Memoirs of a Monster
Journal of Darth Vader, Lord of the Sith and Servant to His Supreme Excellency the Emperor Palpatine. Funny stuff! There are entries with titles like "Does It Hurt When I Go Like This?" and "Keep On Darthin' In The Free World". Here's a quote:
"His spirit danced and rained, his emotions farting out bright, flickering clouds of micro-causal flotsam in every direction. Lumbering arcs of probability swung around him in sick, drunken orbits, any one of them threatening to actualize at a sneeze. Quite a lightshow, really. People who cannot see the Force have no idea what they are missing."

Cool Robot Sculptures ... in Kewl
Robert Bennet has created some really cool robot sculptures using objects found at garbage dumps, basements, construction sites and garage sales. There were inspired by Norman Bel Geddes and Raymond Loewy. (Technorati Tag: Robot)

Make: The Premiere Issue ... in Kewl So the premier issue of Make showed up in my mailbox yesterday. It's pretty freakin' schaweet. It's definitely kept me enthralled, and the cool part is I can come to work and have excited conversations about the articles. And my compatriots will totally understand what I'm blabbbering about.
I'm going to try to make the Gauss Rifle. All I need is a 12" wooden ruler, four gold-plated neodymium-iron-boron magnets (a little pronunciation help please), some nickel-plated steel balls, scotch tape and an exacto knife. The only problem is the article doesn't specify how much velocity that last ball is going to have, so I'm a bit worried about pulling a Wierd Genius. I can just imagine what happens after the fist firing ... "whoa sweet! er, um, oh oh ..." A few seconds pass. "Wow I can see clear through the walls ..."

Friday Cool Stuff ... in Kewl
ne-o
I saw the video for Futureshock's "Late at Night" a while ago - and was blown away. I liked the song, but the visual effects are what makes this video amazing. While surfing around last night, I pleasantly discovered this was only one piece from ne-o. The rest of their videos are pretty cool as well. Definitely check out the commerical for VW Golf GTI.
Antarctica Dispatches
Simon Faithful's journey to Antarctiva captured via sketches on a palm pilot. A great display of how your mind will fill in the details - even where's only pixels in a sea of white.
"on the 23rd of november, i will embark on an two-month journey to the frozen continent. using a palm-pilot as a crude sketchpad, i will make a drawing a day, dispatched to the world via email and appearing on various screens around britain."

New Search Experiences ... in Kewl This came across our internal HCI alias. Google has introduced a Video search. The default search results seem to be based on transcripts. But you can filter the results on title, channel and your zip code. Now if you could somehow subscribe to certain results on a weekly basis, and have those syndicated out - you could possibly scan the transcripts of shows you are interested in and pick which ones you would want to watch. And if you had those said shows on your TiVo ...
The other search mentioned was Amazon's A9 search engine. The cool part is they sent out a fleet of cars equipped with cameras and GPS and took lots of pictures (over 20 million.) So your search results would contain a picture of whatever you were trying to find - say a restaurant. You would also be able to scroll (figuratively) left or right through the neighborhood to help you visualize where you needed to go. Very cool indeed. You can read more about it here.
