Song of the Day ... in Music

In honor of Nirvana's 1991 album "Nevermind" making the Library of Congress' list of additions to the National Recording Registry (CNN story), I'm going with "Lounge Act." To me, it's an intense song of jealousy, and the heaviness of a relationship.

I always wondered where Nirvana would be now, if Kurt Cobain hadn't gone looking for answers down the barrel of a shotgun.

"Truth covered in security
I can't let you smother me
I'd like to but it wouldn't work
Trading off and taking turns
I don't regret a thing
And I've got this friend you see
Who makes me feel and I
Wanted more than I could steal
I'll arrest myself I'll wear a shield
I'll go out of my way to prove I still
Smell her on you

Don't tell me what I wanna hear
Afraid of never knowing fear
Experience anything you need
I'll keep fighting jealousy
Until it's f***ing gone

I'll go out of my way to make you a deal
We've make a pact to learn from who
Ever we want without new rules
We'll share what's lost and what we grew
They'll go out of their way
To prove they still
Smell her on you"

No Time ... in Poetry
There was no time
no time to think
no time to remember
no time to ponder
what no time meant

I had no time
the clock told me so
I took my daughter to school
and she wanted
to hold my hand
and be near me for awhile
I told her
that Daddy had no time
but she cared little
and pulled me closer
so Daddy stayed

I had no time
and the man behind the counter
made mistakes
and took longer
he kept peering nervously at me
wondering when I would start yelling
Instead I smiled
He rushed to finish
and apologized
"Don't worry about it. Thanks and have a nice day."
He relaxed and grinned.

There was no time. I had no time.
But I stopped to hold the door open
and pleasantly nod.
I stopped to ask how she was doing
and she turned to look in my eyes
and smiled a true smile
"Fine. Thank you for asking."

People glanced at their watches
but there was no need for me
I was comfortable
in the knowledge
that I had no time. No time at all

And the man on the corner
dressed like Uncle Sam
waved a sign
telling me
it was Tax Time

Time was forever running away from me
and I had no hope to catch it
But that was ok.
Yes, that was quite alright.
Song of the Day ... in Music

Tom Waits is a cool cat, and that's the probably the best way to describe him. I suppose a few people would throw in "strange", but that means they don't understand. And that's ok not to understand. As long as you are open to enjoying those things. Dig?

I haven't listened to him in awhile, but there he was, prominently displayed in Andrew's AIM status. So the song "The Ocean Doesn't Want Me" popped in my head. so here we are. There's a great explanation of what the song means via the Tom Waits Supplement. And if you read far enough, you'll even find out what strangels are.

"The ocean doesn't want me today
But I'll be back tomorrow to play
And the strangels will take me down deep in their brine
The mischievous braingels
Down into the endless blue wine
I'll open my head and let out all of my time
I'd love to go drowning
And to stay and to stay
But the ocean doesn't want me today
I'll go in up to here
It can't possibly hurt
All they will find is my beer and my shirt
A rip tide is raging and the life guard is away
But the ocean doesn't want me today
The ocean doesn't want me today"

Song of the Day ... in Music

"Ave Maria" by Luciano Pavarotti seems appropriate. Not much else to say.

"Ave Maria, gratia plena.
Maria, gratia plena
Maria, gratia plena
Ave, ave dominus,
dominus tecum.
Benedicta tu in mulieribus,
et benedictus
et benedictus fructus ventris
ventris tui, Jesus.
Ave Maria.

Sancta Maria,
ora pro nobis,
nobis peccatoribus,
nunc et in hora
mortis nostrae.
Amen."
A Man Named Karol Jozef Wojtyla ... in Ramblings

Pope John Paul II's visit to Maribor, Slovenia, captured by Agence France Presse photographer Gabriel Bouys I'm Catholic, but a dissenting one at best. Meaning I just don't agree with many of the Church's teachings, and the idea of an angry God never sat well with me. I went to Catholic school until college, and I was always at constant odds with the priests and nuns.

Be that as it may, the passing of Pope John Paul II greatly affected me, catching me by surprise. I was amazed by the outpouring of grief, and how the world turned its eyes to Rome. He was a Pope of many firsts, the first non-Italian Pope in 455 years and the most widely travelled (more foreign trips than all previous popes put together.) And another fact that awed me - he was responsible for one of the largest human gatherings, which was 5 to 7 million people in the Phillipines. I could go on and on, but if you were interested in his life, I'm sure you watched the news specials like I did.

One of the areas of the Catholic church that did pique my interest when I was young was its technicalities and rituals. Papal Infallibility is one of those technicalities. Many people assume the Pope is always infallible - but this is not the case. He is only infallible in certain and very special circumstances. Reading through the rules of engagement for papal infallibility - it seems to be that the Catholic church is in a bind. People have criticized Pope John Paul II for his stance on women and birth control, but from what I understand, he could not contradict what has been taught before, because the beliefs are considered infallible. And that means irrevocable. He could privately dissent, but he could never voice that difference publicly.

So if you read The Da Vinci Code, and were wondering what the big deal was, that may help you understand.

Anyways, what I really meant to say is that, after all is said and done, I believe Karol Jozef Wojtyla, otherwise known as Pope John Paul II, was a great man.

Song of the Day ... in Music

One of the greatest classics of all time, really there's no other introduction needed. Whenever I'm feeling down, worthless and oh so dreary, I play the Muppet's "Mahna mahna."

And if you don't believe me, you should see for yourself. After viewing that, I defy you to tell me that you weren't at least a little cheered up. Because frankly, I'm giggling like a madman.

"Mahna mahna
(ba dee bedebe)
mahna mahna
(ba debe dee)
mahna mahna
(ba dee bedebe badebe badebe dee dee de-de de-de-de)

mah mama na mahna mah namwomp mwomp
ma mo mo mana mo
mahna mahna
(ba dee bedebe)
mahna mahna
(ba debe dee)
Mahna Mahna!
(ba dee bedebe bedebe badebe debe de-de de-de-de)

...mahna mahna?"

Have a great April Fool's day.

The Coming of Spring ... in Poetry

I watch the people
walking as evening approaches
the sunset glistens gold on their skin
and i'm fevered
with the coming of spring
i'll slip of my shoes
and leave behind my concerns
never mind those things ...
