Life in Alexandria: A World in Three Pictures and One Paragraph
My daily routine in Alexandria...
- Wake around noon and check out the view from the balcony:
- Prepare for three hours of Arabic class:
(The picture above shows me and Lou, from Syracuse, chilling out at Mahmoud's coffee shop, which is on the corner of Khaleed Ibn El Waleed and Mohamed Nabil Hamdy in Alexandria.)
- Spend three hours learning Arabic:
(In the picture above you see me, Osman the interior designer from London, Yusuf the construction worker from Brussels, and Mohamed our Arabic teacher from Alexandria. The picture was taken by Lou, the Java programmer from Syracuse.)
- Hang out with Lou at the fantastic Cap D'or. If you even vaguely like calamari, you will not be disappointed. (In fact, if I had died while eating calamari at Cap D'or, I would not have been aware of it.) My personal theory is that the word "sublime" was invented for the special purpose of describing the calamari at the Cap D'or. Just a block or two away from the Cap D'or, you'll find the Spitfire. This is basically a "dive", strongly reminiscent of several similar places I could name in Vienna, Austria. Interestingly, there were more Europeans in this bar than everywhere else in Alexandria put together (i.e., there were 6 Europeans there, which includes me and Lou).
