Optimizing the Module Manager

Aaaargh! Someone tells you: "Install this module and all your problems will be solved." So you install the module. Later you want to uninstall it for some reason. So you go to the Module Manager and find... that you can't find the module. Why? Because it's in some category and you don't know which category:

However, did you know that you can right-click inside the Module Manager? Do that and choose Sort By Name:

And then... there are no categories. Only modules. And they're sorted alphabetically:

Helpful sometimes. (I blogged about this right-click menu some time ago, but didn't realize the true power of the Sort By Name item, until this morning when a colleague couldn't find a module and I remembered that I'd blogged about this.)

It sounds like we need a "Sort by Date" item (latest to earliest, perhaps), so the most recent and most likely offending modules are shown first.

Good idea. (Also, we need all those items as buttons too, so they're not so hidden.)

It sounds like we need a 'Search΄....

On those rare occasions when I dip into the module manager, I find myself wishing for the old "sort by code name" that used to be available when the module manager was just part of the old system options dialog. If I'm looking for a module that I've been examining in the NB CVS tree, it's easier to find the code name (in manifest.mf) than to hunt around for the bundle and find the localized name.

Ya! This is all fine and wonderful, as long as the module you want to uninstall does not remove access to the tools menu! There should be a key shortcut to the module manager but I don't know of one, is there?

Alt-T, then D

BTW in NB 6.0 trunk builds there is a new sorting option, Sort By > Installation Location. Tips:
  1. To turn off all Java EE functionality, just disable everything in the enterprise category.
  2. To more easily find a module you installed in your userdir, just look in that location so you won't be distracted by all the modules that are part of the regular IDE installation.

Where can I get more information about Module Manager ? The documentation isn't too informative. I have one module (mobility8) that is not active now and it is not possible to activate it (the command is disabled). I tried to uninstall it, it was removed from the list of modules in the manager, but not from the Netbeans installation (contrary the info in the docs), neither from the list of clusters. I am not able to install it again, even if I put all files in correct places (I use Mac OS, thus I can't use the Mobility Windows Installer and must do install by hand). Thanks.

Hi Jeremy. Please write to nbusers@netbeans.org with this question. Probably others have had this problem and can help you.
