Table of Contents for NetBeans Platform Book
We're wrapping up the oft-mentioned NetBeans Platform book ("Rich Client Programming - Plugging into the NetBeans Platform") right now. Our deadline for handing off to the publisher is today. And we're definitely going to make it (although this is where I'm supposed to knock on wood to prevent all our files evaporating into thin air). Here, after much discussion, is the "final" table of contents, exactly as we're going to communicate it to the publisher:

do you plan to release the book as a PDF (or whatever electronic format) ? Alternatively, do you know when the book is planned to be released ? The reason I'm asking is that there is a work project coming up pretty soon that involves NetBeans RCP and I can really really use the book to get a kickstart on the project..

Hi Alex, the book is planned to be released within the first half of this year. A draft PDF will probably be released sometime in February, probably not for free, but not very expensive either. Sorry I can't be more definitive on these points. When things are clearer, I will reveal more... so watch this space. In the meantime, there are heaps of tutorials on pltform.netbeans.org/tutorials.

I would have paid a whole lot of money for this book when I was getting started with the platform. I will jump at the chance to pay a little money for it now.

I was clicking on the first chapter for maybe half an hour before realizing it was not a link! :) Just kidding!
But really, can't wait to get the book in ANY format!

Netbeans 6 editor is somewhat different, will Chapter 12,13 tell us something about the differences ?
Anyway I will buy the book

Thanks all for the supportive comments. Bjoern, the book will work for both 5.5 and 6.0. So, in general, we do not discuss new 6.0 stuff, except where there are differences with 5.5. We also provide code that works in both 5.5 and 6.0, so because we know what will be different in 6.0, we don't provide anything that doesn't work there too. There'll be an accompnaying website with supplemental chapters, such as some specifically for 6.0. However, the aim of the book is to be valid both for 5.5 developers AND 6.0 developers.

I second (fifth?) the request for someone to hurry up and publish this thing. I would be willing to test-drive a pre-release copy -- been using NB for a few years but haven't even moved beyond a "Hello World" project with Platform, so it'd be a good test.
I have a need for RCP in the next few months. Let us know where it is and I'll pay a fee for early access and provide tons of feedback. I suspect others would gladly do the same.

Thanks for the comments anjan and Patrick. However, please note that there's no reason to wait for this book if you're going to develop RCP applications. The tutorial page (httpL//platform.netbeans.org/tutorials) and the Developer FAQ (http://wiki.netbeans.org/wiki/view/NetBeansDeveloperFAQ) provide more than enough information between them to help you develop very complex applications.
However, as soon as the rough cut PDF version is available, I will announce it here in this blog (and also on www.netbeans.org). It should be in the beginning of February somewhere (as far as I'm concerned, the sooner the better).
