I think the role of any IT person these days is to try to finds ways to reduce costs. For an architect, that can translate into eliminating costly licensing fees by using open source solutions where feasible and looking to the cloud to replace part of the internal infrastructure. Thinking along these lines will not only help the company you work for get through these tough economic times but will also put you in good standing; you will be seen as someone who is not only technical but also as one who understands the business of the company which when you get down to it, is to make money.
