Last night, I had another riding lesson on Pimms - the thoroughbred horse that teaches me to ride. My highlight of the lesson was to learn how to canter. The canter is the second fastest pace of a horse after the gallop.

As you probably can imagine, not everything went smoothly. It took me some time to find my balance and to get in tune with Pimms' canter. Riding in any pace is comfortable for the horse only when the rider is finely tuned in to the horse's movements. Anything else is not pleaseant for the horse (or the rider).

During my quest to canter, Pimms took care of me. One time on a right hand turn, I was leaning too much to the left. Pimms stopped the turn and went straight. In doing so, he saved me from a not so graceful dismount.

Pimms showed three character traits. He recognised me as a novice rider, watched out for my wellbeing, and forgave me for my mistakes.

Back home after my lession, I wanted to check on Sun's blogs and mistakenly typed in "http://blo.sun.com". The browser in no uncertain terms told me that I made an error. No further consideration, no sense for my intent, no forgiveness. Error, that's it.

Maybe riding is not the only thing Pimms can teach us.

Georg: I read this with great interest. Next week my wife will take possession of her late brother's Arabian, Suede. He will be transported from southern California up here to Oakland, and will be at a stables in the Berkeley hills. My wife hasn't been on a horse in over 40 years, but Suede is a special 12-year-old. I've only met him once and was impressed by his intelligence. At our first meeting he rushed at me (I was hanging over the fence around his paddock) and stopped just short of crashing into the fence. He definitely had a smile on his face, like: "Scared Ya!". Pictures and commentary will certainly appear on my weblog (once Network Solutions clears up the renewal problem today). And I'll be following your experiences with Pimms with interest.

HI Georg! Not sure if you'll remember me, we met in California last year during a visit. Anyway, I want to congratulate you on your new riding lessons. I am also very impressed with your impressions of riding. Personally I have found that horses teach us more about ourselves than other people do. They can and will forgive us our mistakes. They will forgive and they still try to do things for us no matter how inept we are. :) mSuch a lesson; we should all learn this one, I think. Bravo! Keep the lesson posts coming!
