When I started to ride horses, I did so with all the modern gadgets. Saddle, bridle, pads, jodphurs, riding boots, helmets, gloves etc. For some time now we have our horses at home which increased my ability to read our horses minds and moods, thus increasing my confidence around them. It was a couple of days ago where my confidence was at a level at which I felt ready to realise my ambition to ride a horse with the no saddle, only a bridle (I'm not as brave as to give us this modern tool yet). I have to say it was awesome. With your hips just behind the horse's withers, you can feel every single back muscle of the horse. You can feel or better see the horse bend and when going round and soft in the neck, you can feel the back muscle getting to work. You can even anticipate a change in direction before it actually happens. With this direct feedback loop, communication was more direct, in both ways.
To all the equestrians out there : I've got a cheap saddle for sale :-)
