i've been mondo busy as of late. just now coming up for air. there should be some goodness to share in a bit. i just watched will wright's spore demo from gdc and it blew me away. amazing. all systems should strive for such component autonomy yet massively combinatorial adaptation. key words include asynchronous, shared and portable content, peer to peer. wow. inspiring. dc2daylight has some really nice things to say about myjxta and, more importantly imho, about the folks make the myjxta experience real and meaningful. the later is what it is really all about. I've been using MyJXTA for a couple of days, and I really like it. It has a text-to-speech feature that allows me to follow a conversation while I work on other things, and it allows me to set up file shares as well. MyJXTA is great for me since I'm very hardware/OS agnostic. The folks developing it are great too. I was really pleased that as soon as I logged on, I was greeted by someone (polo) who gave me a tour and some pointers on using it. The experience was exactly what Esther Dyson wrote about in Release 2.0; an online community in action. Get MyJXTA here. Give it a try, and look me up. My user name is "dc2daylight". Thanks to MaryMary for turning me on to MyJXTA, to "polo" for the tour, and to GonzoMoFo for caring about what users think. MyJXTA :: use it - learn it - do it

whilst doing the linux world gig i got the chance to point out blogs.sun.com to folks, many of which didn't realize it existed, which is ok given the info is organic and the data within will find it's way into the right and proper hands over time. as a result of these discussions it feels to me that bsc would benefit from another entry point (aka view). possibly a top-down approach, if you will, so that folks just happening upon bsc can, with relative eas, find and connect with the folks that are working common interests one way or another. here's a recap of the interactions. one individual was interested in learning more about sun's accessibilty work to which i, unfortunately had little to go on. fortunately, my partner in crime was able to intervene. as the discussion ensued we brought up one Peter Korn, who these folks knew, and were delighted to discover (by word of mouth) that he had his blog groove going on. delighted is an understatement. my problem is that i know, or more correctly i *believe* i know, there are others doing work in this area but not having a definitive point of reference, on how to hook into the "blog collective" bothers me as we have an incredible story to tell on many fronts. that by doing so we can only learn and appropriately prioritize our activities from direct interactions with the representative communties. tight feedback loop per se. as another data point i was chatting with some bsd, who are without a doubt are the most pragmatic of penguinites i personally have had interactioned with was refreshing in and of iteself, about jxta and possible use cases. things progressed a bit and i pointed out that solaris 10 chalk full of features and slated to roll out as open source. having the solaris express booth nearby was helpful as well. i then spiced up the discussion with the fact that *the* kernel engineers are blogging directly, no noise, just direct communications. the response were jaw dropping eyes wide open "you are kidding me" ... oh, it felt good :). i then proceeded to bring up a browser and was, again, faced with the navigational issue this very entry is about, that being, what is the best means to dial into the sub-channels/themes that collectively are bsc? in this case i pointed to the dTrace'omatic crew which are diligent about adding "friends of" links on thier entries ... something we would all do well to follow suit. i know i'm trying to do my part to "bring order from chaos." btw, that have you ever kissed a girl thread is bloody classic! hilarious beyond belief. so, let's bring it on home. some "meta" bsc categories that come to mind include accessibity, gnome, jds, solaris, linux, etc. there are more, no doubt, but you get the idea. so, what to do? i know we can do better. is this feature here today? right under our nose? not sure but i doubt it. wiki by chance? sounds reasonable to me as the only real difference is a wiki is editable by all (so is a blog if you share your pwd) and it is fixed in time whereas blogs roll off the radar as time moves on ("we all float on" - modest mouse). with this, one can envision theme/category/affinity context that spans individual blog entries yet the two engines point bi-directionally into one another. hmmmmm. cool. folks know precisely my recommendations in this space as i am not one to be shy when voicing my opinion when potential "architectural" foibles are at play. i still stand by stated recommendation. what i am doing here is providing *real* world use cases whereby we can readily help folks connect ... which is what this is really all about ... without specifying the uber solution. i'd love to see something come along that can help build more bridges. lest folks can't get to sleep wondering what i would construct/rollout/etc ... i'm a fan of snipsnap. man, i just read that one can install snipsnap via java webstart. how cool is that? my "clan k3wl" buddies to the right, yeah, right over there, have built out some nice sites in using snipsnap.

unified myjxta :: chat about it
finally got around to building an entire jxta stack signed with a common certificate. this helps tremendously as jxta is, by definition, comprised of many subsystems each of which, in turn, have thier jar dependencies, etc. now, adding a time dimension to the mix the fundamental elements can and do change, which has all the makings for a challanging systematic build. as a result of a bit of nightly build process optimization it was relatively trivial to spin out a unified myjxta build the results of which immediately normalzed the number of redundant security notifications (due to the certificate being self signed) down to one. i like that.

i agree with my compadre jclingan. very much so in fact. theft is plain and simply theft. i hate it as well and the fundamentals are so obvious ... a penny saved here is a penny filched elsewhere. what comes around goes around. just what did your mother teach you during your formulative years? integration, business integration or otherwise, is upon us. this is a good thing and it is nothing new that nefarious types bend good things into dark shapes, at times. anyways, back to integration in it's simplest form. pervasive transports are a good thing(tm). no doubt. identity is both enabling and a "mischief maker" deterrent. multi-leveled identity is an interesting concept. i mean, that is how we interoperate in the world at large everyday. saying hi to strangers equates to presence and a protocol handshake. no more need be done. buying groceries involves a bit more credentials (eg credit card) or not (cold hard greenbacks). buying a licensed controlled product involves more disclosure. ok, with multi-levelled identity at play in the real world the logical conclusion is that objects, in the ether world, perform in a like manner vs the generic all-or-none type approach we are exposed to day in and day out. to do so context needs to be established, shared, built upon and credentialed at the lowest level possible and when two (or more) widgets cross paths on the ether sidewalk say hi they can, assuredly, engage in an entirely appropriate and meaningful exchange ... or not. a flexible and pervasive transport is absolutely fundamental for this to, well, work in the real world, on the street, outside those caged systems that run the few but significantly large systems. upon this transport we have, to a significant degree, the necessary pieces to construct "object rapport" in an organic and scalable fashion regardless as to the system domain. objects with personality so to speak. p2p is such a general term that i use it less and less as it has taken on the baggage of the behaviour of the bad vs a moniker for the purist opportunity that is still very much attainable ... that being to bestow contextual meaning upon every object in varying degrees unleashing a structured micro-economy (*lots* of little things) just as real, vibrant, multi-dimensional and accountable as the world we live in, for better or worse. i choose better.

new and shiny ... and noisy :: chat about it
newly minted projects are intersting to watch in that each usually have their supporters and detractors alike, the later of which are usually most active at the onset. in this case, jdnc is a "new old" project in that it is trusty swing with a shiny new coat of paint. anyways, one indivual has been rather expressive in his concerns to the point of stating some rather odd comments re an open source project, specifically:
amazing. i remind you this is an open source project. intrigued, i respond:
no reply. no suprise. he evidently has a (6)itch about the project name and couldn't resist dragging out a laundry list of other sun sponsorred technologies that shared the ever so facinating similiarity in that they all have (three or) four letter acronyms for names ... including jxta:
ahhhhh ... wrong'o. re jxta, we get self acclaimed "newbies" literally everyday on the lists and/or discovering myjxta for the first time. never once have i seen folks lingering at the door, daring to enter and whine at the door simply because of the sign over the archway. i mean honestly now. further, i always appreciate new eyes on my projects runtime, code, process and docs so that we can continually tune it making it more palatable in the process. if four letter acronyms are filters that keep anal retentive types at bay ... i need to break out my scrabble board and score big with 4's. i encouraged him to consider shifting his thoughts to a thought provoking blog ... somewhere in the ether ... out there, yes ... on the distant, oh so far, horizon. yes, out there. now *run* ... fast. newsflash. this message just came in on channel myjxta:
'nuff said. get real. go big or go home!

grow'n up in colo :: chat about it
shudson310 looks to be a fellow colo native. colo. great state! great state of mind! i grew up in grand jct, colo. basically between salt lake and denver. to be more precise, i my neck of the woods is the "redlands" which is aptly named. lots of red dirt, lizards and sage brush. we ran a ranch of about 120 charlette(sp) cattle, 15 wild mustang horses and other breed horses, 100s of chickens, etc. good way to grow up. tough way to make a living ... then again my dad worked two full time jobs concurrently, a doctor by day and night and a rancher in between ... as if there was an in between. my dad's side of the family has been rooted in colo for generations. there are still small western slope towns using functional resevoirs that were carved out with horse and team by my relatives of not so long ago. further back a bit i am related to abraham lincoln via marriage to mary todd lincoln.

Cool. Looks like timf has siblings working at Sun. Two of my brothers work at Sun as well. Further, I have worked directly with both of them on projects in the past and had an extreme blast in doing so. I'd do it again in a heart beat, if the conditions were just right ... small/fast/aggressive initiative/team/schedule kind of gig. The best kind.
