Hello World!

This is my first blog, and although I'm late to the game, I'd still like to play.

My name is Gregor Matthews and I work for Sun in Eagan, Minnesota. We're a small development shop here in Minnesota with a ton of expertise in storage management, mainly SAM-QFS, Automatic Data Migrator, Media Management System and the such. I've been with Sun since 2001, and prior to that worked for a small startup company called LSC (thanks Harriet and Don!) and before that Cray Research.

Why Gregor?

My given name is Gregory, but I've gone by Gregor over the years. I get many questions about the origin of my nickname. It all started back in junior high school in my German class, where we read "The Metamorphosis" by Franz Kafka. From wikipedia:

"Gregor Samsa is a fictional character in The Metamorphosis, a novella by Franz Kafka, who tries to live his life after having been transformed into a "monstrous vermin". He is a travelling salesman."

Not a fitting description of me personally, as vermin and sales are two things I avoid. My German teacher at the time enjoyed shouting, "Gregor!" from across the room and I guess it stuck -- for about the last 35 years!

I'll be blogging about a variety of subjects, but am mostly interested in the storage community (archiving, tapes, HSM and the such) with personal interests in sailing (I own a boat on Lake Superior, largest freshwater lake in North America), curling (yes, the kind on ice), and anything that might take me to San Francisco.

I also hope to be learning much more about other storage products, making them more accessible to the general population, where the industry is heading, and how we can help design a better mousetrap. (The fact is, we're moving in to the season here in Eagan where the mousetraps had better be working well...).

Best Regards,

- Gregor

Can you tell us something about ADM Mr. Samosa.

Posted by Colin Ngam on December 06, 2007 at 04:51 PM CST #

Sure. First off, it's Mr. Samsa, not Samosa.

Automatic Data Migration (ADM) is a hierarchical storage maangement
system we are developing in Eagan. We're designing it to be used with ZFS or other filesystems, and it will interface via a DMAPI protocol. It's scalable, modular, provides basic archiving to tape/disk, and multi-hosted. It will also have a policy manager that interfaces can interface with other applications.

See the ADM project at: http://www.opensolaris.org/os/project/adm/
We're still under construction, but trying to post in the OpenSolaris world as fast we can learn.

On the opensolaris.org MMS page you maintain, there is a link for "Documentation" that is broken. I am interested in reading the documentation if it is available. Please send a link.

Thank you,

Marshall Onsrud

Marshall, I've fixed the link and now have the Media Management Spec posted on the "documentation" page. Let me know if you are still having problems.

We would appreciate any feedback or suggestions on the spec or other ADM & MMS questions.

Regards,

- Gregor
