MMS IEEE Working Group Meeting - Are You Interested?
Are you interested in participating or following the Media Management System (IEEE 1244) standard? Read on.
Just this past weekend, we received a note from one of the IEEE standards members about getting the Media Management System (IEEE 1244) working group together for a meeting, including updating the standard based on some changes we would like to see. Paul Cheng, the lead developer here at Sun, has been in contact with Curtis Anderson and Jack Cole from IEEE. Curtis and Paul many years to tape and tape management projects at SGI and have kept in touch. Paul is implementing the standard for my team at Sun and we'll be using it with the Automatic Data Migration service for Solaris.
Curtis and Jack are thinking a January working meeting would be a great way to get the standard updated. They also think meeting someplace warm and sunny would be nice. I've offered up beautiful Minneapolis in January -- lots of sun and but not much of the warmth!
We'll see where this meeting goes, and I'll keep people up-to-date as the logistics roll out. If you are interested in participating, it's an open meeting and I'm sure you are more than welcome. Please let us know and we'll make sure you are invited.
It's great to hear from the IEEE MMS group and see them get together again, and we're excited to move forward and very soon get our implementation posted.
Again, let me know if you are interested. Either respond here or contact me at gregor.matthews@sun.com.
Happy Holidays!

Gregor,
I'm a 30 year Tape Engineer with Sun/STK.
I am interested in MMS capabilities and what is happening in this space.
My primary interest is in specific Tape Drive requirements that will support removalble media management software in any OS or platform.
I am currently aware of an IBM effort called IRMM that is said to be based on IEEE 1244 standards and will support NON-IBM media and NON-IBM libraies and tape drives. I suspect that may be Sun/STK and LTO/DLT drives and media but not sure.
Can you point me to more information on IBM's efforts (IRMM) or any other simular Sun solution that may be trying to address same Media Management issues for our Sun/STK tape customers?

Steve,
Here is the link to IBM's IRMM. You may already have this:
http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/z/os/linux/solutions/irmm/
Our implementation is initially targeted at our own libraries (STK), but we obviously would
like to go beyond that.
Are you familiar with the ACSLS/SLM team under the direction of Mike Williams?
I'm assuming that you are. They are familiar with our project (and we with theirs) and
both would like to see a standard API implemented whereby we would allow applications
to access STK and non-STK libraries. But we're not there yet.
Also, copying Paul Cheng and Rick Matthews (MMS architects) as they may have some more
information in this area.
