An essential part of Redshift is the onset of distributed 'mega' data centers operated by a few large-scale service providers.
Day 3 of CEC began with a next generation data center panel which included some of today's key service providers who discussed their data center requirements.
Pictured here from left to right:
Eric Billingsley, Fellow, Finding & Research Labs, eBay
Charles Bess, Fellow, Innovation Center, EDS
Jeff Routledge, Dir, Systems Infrastructure, Fox Interactive Media
Dilep Bhandarkar, DE, Global Foundation Services, Microsoft
Jim Baty, Distinguished Engineer, VP and Chief Architect of Sun's Global Systems Engineering organization was the host.
That was a hard act to follow, but the next speaker was certainly up to the task!
Don Grantham, Executive Vice President, Global Sales and Services, closed the event by thanking the 4,000 engineers in attendance for a job well done.
We would like to thank them as well. What an outstanding group of engineers!

At the CEC on Monday night, the Divas grabbed an early dinner and then dropped by the Unconference and Speed Geeking sessions.
For the Unconference, potential speakers announced the topic they'd like to present and then the audience voted for the 10 topics they wanted to learn more about. Once the topics were selected, the participants moved to various rooms to hear one of the presentations and ask questions.
Unconference speakers line up after the vote:

Speed Geeking is similar to Speed Dating, but the object of Speed Geeking is to talk to the experts of various technical topics and learn more about each subject--not to find a date! Take a look at Chris Gerhard's October 10th blog - he gave nice simple account of the Speed Geeking process and topics.
Hal Stern wore his best geekwear (from Computergear.com) for his Speed Geeking session:

Bob Sokol and Julian Edwards write their topic, "Do we really understand RedShift?", on their flip chart:

Dave Douglas, Vice President, Eco Responsibility was the opening keynote this morning. He discussed valuable strategies for the next generation data centers. We also learned that it takes 1000 years for a water bottle to disintegrate. I hid mine under the chair and have sinced switched over to refilling my new water bottle!
Jonathan Schwartz, Chief Executive Officer and President, was the next keynote this morning. Here's Dan showing off his "I LOVE SOLARIS" shirt to Jonathan.
Here is the rest of the audience doing the same!
And once again, we used our back stage pass to get you this EXCLUSIVE photo of Hal and Jonathan taping a video: Behind the Scenes at CEC 2007 -

Bonjour! (We're staying at the Paris hotel, so we thought we'd try a little French.) In case you don't speak French, the title reads in English: "The Divas at the CEC on Sunday"
Our schedule has been really hectic since we arrived on Saturday, so our blog postings may be a little out of order and out of sync with each other.
Before the GSS Technical Leadership meeting started on Suday, we got a chance to meet and chat with Ruben Barros, PSD, Iberia, and Robert Darby, Services, Australia:

A question for Hal during the GSS Technical Leadership meeting:

I guess you can say that the Divas have press passes. We get to hang out backstage and see what really happens...
Look at all the engineers who volunteered their time to make sure things (Second Life, SMS, presentations, etc) are running smoothly:
This is the band for the General Session. They are playing a laser harp.
The audience anxiously awaits the CEC opening event:
More photos to come. Gotta run!!

Vegas is great! We began the day at 7am with a run up and down the "strip". Where was everyone???
Could they be attending an early breakfast meeting at Sun's CEC conference or nursing a hangover from
Pamela and Rick's wedding reception?
Well... believe it or not we were not invited to the latter, so you will have to see our photos of Day 2 at CEC instead!
Our heart starter breakfast:
Hal at rehearsal:
Hal & Jim practicing for the big day:
Dan going on 3 days without sleep:
Me & Diana:
Is Paul laughing at me?
I can't tell you about this photo as I don't want to give away all the CEC
secrets!

...doesn't always stay in Vegas. Especially if the Divas are attending CEC 2007 and happen to have a camera (or two)!! So, get ready for a photo log of our CEC adventure.
When you don't know where you're going, this girl is a very welcome sight!
When I arrived on Saturday, I sat with the guys in the next two photos on the shuttle heading to Bally's and Paris. I couldn't believe they had just completed a 28 hour journey from Dubai to Las Vegas...they looked great!
Francois Coetzee is a Partner Technology Manager in the MENA Partner Sales Organisation.
This photo came out way too dark and I owe them a much better picture! This is Peter Avakian and Lourens Strydom who are part of the Global Systems Engineering community in Dubai.
More photos from the other Diva coming soon!
