Wednesday June 22, 2005 Claire and I are in Japan this week talking to folks and the press about OpenSolaris. It's been a bit tough for me since my laptop batteries are always dead. I have an Acer Ferrari, running Solaris 10 of course, but the power cord is the US-style 3 prong grounded type. Unfortunately, most Japanese outlets are only the 2 prong type which means I don't have an easy way to recharge my laptop. Being on the road without Internet access is not easy.
Interest here has been great. Lots of press and articles and pictures galore. Check out me and Claire sporting our fancy earphones. It's like being at the U.N.! (These links are all in Japanese, but the pictures are a hoot....)
Kinda reminds you of Uhura, doesn't it?
If Claire looks a little dazed, it's because 30 cameras were flashing at her at once for the first 15 minutes. It was like being on the red carpet on Oscar night.
The one thing we got drilled into our heads here is that localization is very important. Certainly Solaris is localized in Japanese and many other languages, but we want to make sure we continue that tradition with new contributions coming into OpenSolaris. The more the merrier.
Blogs and discussion groups in local languages are great ideas too. We've had a couple of people tell us here that they only read the Japanese blogs. If you want to get your message out, it better be in a language the people can understand. Our host Masatsugu Koketsu has a great blog for those of you that read Japanese. Check it out!
