What are Chinese students asking?
It is really a great experience to interact with students and hear those great questions.
Today I attended Sun University Day(it is a part of Sun Tech Day and targets the student audience.) hold in Tsinghua University here in Beijing, and I did a demo to show OpenSolaris+IPS+ZFS Time Slider.
Below is the agenda.(Yes, Ian is with us. But I didn't get a chance to chat with him.)
| 13:30 - 14:30 | OpenSolaris Keynote | Ian Murdock |
| 14:30 - 15:30 | OpenSolaris Demos (Desktop and Entertainment, Package management and ZFS, Developer Tools, VirtualBox) | Zhou Xiang, Harry Fu, Alex Zhang, William Xue |
| 15:40 - 16:20 | NetBeans New & Cool | Wen Huang |
| 16:20 - 17:00 | DarkStar: Scalable Games Infrastructure | Karl Haberl |
From my side I would say that the talks and demos are very successful. There are about 200 or so students. And they showed great interests on OpenSolaris and raised all kinds of questions.(We delayed a lot due to answering questions.)
Some students seems eager to know much about OpenSolaris's internals that make it superior to other OS. This is a little bit beyond our estimation since we thought few students may have interests to kernel and commands, and we avoided to show much command lines. In fact our demos are targetting to show the ease of using OpenSolaris. While, perhaps due to Ian's presence, it seems the event did attract some Linux experts. And they did araise some questions regarding network, file system and performance.
Here I log some of those questions that impress me most: (Some are addressed to Ian)
-How does Sun make money by open source
-Compare ZFS with Google's GFS
-What's the different aspects of OpenSolaris compared with Linux that makes it superior
-Are there any benkmark software available on OpenSolaris?
-What's the target users of OpenSolaris
-Is OpenSolaris for a server or a desktop?(Is there a enterprise version?)
-Hardware requirements/Hardware compatibility
-How about OpenSolaris's security
-ZFS's principle
-Software compatibility (I think it is not about the availabitily, but -- will software package for other systems be installed on OpenSolaris)
-Compare VirtuBox with VMWare (What's the advantage to choose Virtualbox)
Btw, I think it is a pity that we didn't cover DTrace in our demos today. Those who asking for the differentiators may love to see it.
