"Social" Networks? Think again...

Very interesting insight/info from Steve Rubel today on teen use of social networks. He says,

"Conventional wisdom says that teens dominate social networks. Not so. The oldies are crashing the party. The vast majority of those who frequent these sites networking sites are over 25 years old, according to comScore.

OK then. Social network sites must then be about being social, right? Again not so. According to new data from The Pew Internet Project & American Life Project, some 55% percent of teens who publish to these sites do so through restricted profiles and pages. Further, 66% of teens who are socially networked have their profiles blocked from view by anyone but their friends."

So how about you "oldies" out there... do you restrict access to your SL house, myspace, etc. to your friends or are you open to the world?

EQO Moble

Alarm:Clock has a quick write up on start-up company EQO Moble.  According to the site, EQO, "connects your social networks and your IM networks to you cell
phone, whatever cell phone you hold In fact they claim to be the first
to extend skype to range of phones."

Anyone sign up for this yet?  I see it works with blackberry (my cell phone of choice).

Tag your Skype account with your interests

Neat find on Rich Sharples' blog about a startup called Messagr.

According to Rich, Messagr.com "overlays Skype's user directory with some interesting social networking meta-data. Essentially you can tag your Skype account with your own interests so people can find you and contact you easily and in real-time."

I haven't tried this yet, but plan to when I get home and on my desktop, which has Skype.

Rich cautions that an agreement between Skype and LinkedIn could bring unwanted recruiter calls, but remembering that I came to Sun after a recruiter found me on LinkedIn, I can only say that a partnership between the two companies would be a good thing.  heh heh
