The Amazing Spelling Bee Contest
"URSPRACHE". "Can you pronounce the word again?" "It's URSPRACHE". "May I have the definition please?" "Ursprache is a parent language, especially one reconstructed from the evidence of later languages". "May I know the etymology (origin of the word) please?". "Greek"....."URSPRACHE"...."U...R..S..P..R..A..C..H.E". After the young Katherine Close (who is in her 8th Grade and just 13 years) spelled the word, there was standing ovation continuously for five minutes in the 79th Annual Scripps Spelling Bee Contest. Yes, she won the Spelling Bee championship for the year 2006.
The spelling bee championship is a matter of recognition and achievement for all the hard work and dedication shown by the young kids to master the words. You can call it a competition, a sport (without any match fixing blogs.sun.com/images/smileys/smile.gif" class="smiley" alt=":-)" title=":-)" />), or a litmus test for their memory power.
The interesting and ofcourse mind boggling aspect in the contest was the participants. The participating age limit must not exceed 16 years. There was one contestant called Kavya Shivashankar (an Indian origin), who is just 10 years old and highly competent with her seniors but unfortunately losing (for the word "GAMATRIALE") a couple of rounds before the final. The scene after a contestant looses, is the worst part for the audience and the judges. Since all the contestants are in their tender age, their parents have a tough job to console them (before they start weeping aloud). For every loser, the word that showed him/her the exit must be the one, which they can't forget in their lifetime for sure blogs.sun.com/images/smileys/smile.gif" class="smiley" alt=":-)" title=":-)" />.
The brief television interviews with the contestants, really explain us the hard work and dedication they carried out all the years. One contestant said that he is thorough with all the words given in the recently published dictionary. It requires not only just knowing the words, but also the etymology, alternate pronunciations, all possible definitions of a word, and whatever it needs to become a champion. For example, there were even words with Sanskrit and Hindi etymologies such as "KUNDALINI" and "IZZAT" respectively, both of which were spelled accurately within seconds by the champion, Katherine.
Frankly speaking, I was overwhelmed seeing the program in a sports channel. The purpose of the competition is to help students in their tender age to improve spelling, vocalbularies, learn concepts, and develop correct English usage, which I think is fully served.

My First Blog
Inspired by people who started their personal blogs very recently, I tried to find out more about blogging through my favorite web resource, "Wikipedia". It was mentioned that the concept of blogging started in the year 1994 and gained popularity in 1996.
Though I knew the concept of blogging and the abundant availability of free blogs in the network, I never even thought about to create one. Now, I am very glad that I am in the right place where I can get tremendous inspiration to create my personal blog.
To kickstart, I just wanted to introduce myself (an easy way to start blogging
). I am a member of the SUN IEC Portal Server Pubs team. Since I joined the team three months back, I am in the process of learning the 'not-so-easy' Portal product. However, I will try my best to contribute whatever valuable information to this wonderful community.
One interesting fact in the concept of blogging is that I need not worry much about the grammar, sentence structure, adherence to the editorial style guide and so on which is a must in technical documentation
.
Lets blog to contribute and share knowledge...
