What's in store for Java ME tech? A Java Store

Here's a story from The Register about the Java Store. There's some good questions raised and interesting guessing by the reporter. The important part is that there will be an alternative to the Apple App Store. Thank G*d!

See:

What's in store for Java ME?

Here's a quote:

Java Store is the planned front-
end to the Java warehouse, a
 repository where Sun hopes it
 can convince some six million
 Java developers to post
 applications.

 Sun wants partners, such as
 telcos, to then customize their
own Java store fronts to the
 warehouse. Verizon in June
 announced it will also roll-
out its own store for mobile
 apps built using Java.
Let's see Apple also allow telcos and carriers to customize their own App Store... Ain't gonna happen.

For those who like programming on the Mac: Java ME SDK 3.0

Some mobile developers like using a Windows PC to develop their apps. Some like using the (ahem) Mac. Since a Mac is not a real development computer, but still very popular with all those who are fashion-conscious (see, I'm just kidding and seeing if I can rile the Mac users out there) Sun has decided to release an early access version of the Java ME SDK 3.0 on Mac OS X.

See:

Develop Java Mobile apps on a Mac

Here's a quote:

 Sun Microsystems has released
an early access preview of the
 Java Micro Edition Software
 Development Kit (Java ME SDK)
3.0 for Mac OS X. This means
that developers who work on a
Mac will no longer be excluded
 from developing mobile Java
 applications.
Great, now we have to explain mobile Java development to all those Mac users out there. OK, this is a cell phone. No, put that iPhoney thing down. Pick up a real cell phone with Java ME technology... :-)

Wired Magazine's Mobile Device of the Year: Java ME enabled Kindle 2

In the latest Wired Magazine, Nov 2009 issue, pg 104, they have the Amazon Kindle 2 as the Mobile Device of the Year, in the Fall Gear section.

 totally obsolete.
As Spike Lee would say, "It's gotta be the Java ME!"

Good review of Java ME CDC-based cell phone, who needs iPhone!

Here's a good review on YouTube of the Samsung Instinct HD SPH-M850 cell phone from Sprint, which happens to have been a project I worked on here at Sun Microsystems, Inc., helping to put Java ME CDC technology on it. It's nice to see techies (like those at CNET) like the stuff you work on. :-)

See:

New Java ME CDC-based Samsung Instinct HD

Woo-hoo! HD format video recording on this puppy. Although all the iPhone fanboys would probably disagree, I think this is a good competitor to the iPhoney. At least, it's a lot of fun to play with and people are buying it... and, it has Java. :-P

Sony sono molto buoni, with 2010 Java ME games line-up

Here's a nice line-up of Java ME games from Sony Pictures for next year (2010).

See:

New Java ME Games for 2010

Here's a quote:

 The newly-announced titles include:
  James Bond: 007 mobile game
  Wheel of Fortune (February)
  JEOPARDY! (March)
  The Three Stooges (May)
  The Karate Kid (June)
  Salt (July)
  The Joker's Wild (September)

All SPHE mobile games are available
 on Android, Blackberry, BREW, J2ME,
 iPhone, Palm and Windows Mobile
 devices.
Can't wait until the Karate Kid Java ME game comes out... except, if the remake of the movie the Karate Kid is supposed to be in China this time around and involve a kid learning Kung Fu from a local maintenance man (played by Jackie Chan instead of Mr. Miyagi played by Pat Morita), shouldn't it be called the Kung Fu Kid??? :-)

New Bolt Browser in Java ME

The new Bolt Browser written in Java ME technology, now bursts out of beta.

See:

Bolt Browser a Blast of Bodaciousness

Here's a quote:

 As before, Bolt streams video
 from sites like YouTube, which
 still eludes the otherwise
 excellent Opera Mini 5 (Beta).
The Bolt Browser is supposedly much better than Opera Mini, with faster rendering and streaming video from YouTube. I'm waiting for the two to merge some day...

Pay it forward with Java ME tech

Amazon announced they launched the new Amazon Mobile Payments Service which allows the Amazon processing tool to work inside today's Java ME tech-enabled cell phones. Cool! Feel like downloading that Amazon MP3 music file. It's just an Amazon 1-click away...

See:

Amazone Mobile Payment w/Java ME

Here's a quote:

One of the first companies to
 launch the Amazon MPS is
 Handmark, a mobile content
 store where customers can shop
 for games and applications
 across a number of platforms
 including Android, Blackberry,
 iPhone, Palm OS, Windows Mobile,
 Symbian, and Java devices.
Be careful, though... With just several accidental click, click, clicks with your cell phone hitting your keys in your pocket, you could have bought yourself five trillion MP3 files. Whups.

Tracking Java ME tech using Flurry

T-Mobile in the U.S. and Flurry have teamed up to provide analytic data for mobile apps for their mobile developers, including Java ME app developers.

See:

Mobile Analytic Data from T-Mobile

Here's a quote:

 According to Flurry, more than
 5,000 Android, BlackBerry and
 J2ME developers have signed up
 for its analytics service since
 the solution launched in Jan.
 2009. Flurry now tracks over
 200 million end-user sessions
 per month...
Scary. I'm not sure I'd like companies tracking my mad Tetris skills...

Cell Phones with Java ME tech popular in Africa

Here's an article how Java ME tech-enabled cell phones are big in Africa, even in countries with lack of infrastructure.

See:

Java ME popular in Africa

Here's a quote:

 Free and open source software,
such as Java, continues to be
 extremely popular in Africa,
with the number of paid app
 downloads also slowly
 increasing. Companies that
 hope to work in Africa,
 however, routinely must
 provide their own
 infrastructure...
Nice to see that open source software does have its merits...

Ring, ring... It's your new Java ME satellite cell phone calling

Did you ever get p*ssed off over dropped calls or a weak signal area caused by your wireless carrier? Well, fret not. Get this Java ME tech-enabled phone which happens to be a dual-mode satellite mobile device as well.

See:

Dual-mode Java ME satellite cell phone

Here's a quote:

As the world's smartest and lightest
 dual-mode satellite mobile phone
 (170g), Thuraya SG-2520 offers
 dynamic performance, inimitable
 style, and innovative features
 surpassing all other available
 satellite-based products.
 ...
 Supports a variety of applications
 based on Java (J2ME)
Laugh at all those poor iPhone users stuck on the AT&T wireless network as you use your Java ME tech-enabled satellite cell phone to go orbital. Yeah, it runs about $1233 schmakeroos, but isn't it worth it to laugh at all those iPhone users, and have all that extra extended signal coverage? Well, maybe just the first part... :-)

Everybody buys Java ME technology high tech startups

AT&T announced today that they are buying Plusmo, Inc. a high tech startup that has been creating Mobile Widgets on platforms such as Java ME technology.

See:

Plusmo bought by AT&T

Here's a quote:

 AT&T announced today that they
 will be acquiring Plusmo, a
 mobile applications company
 that receives about 100 million
 monthly pageviews. The company
 makes mobile applications for
 the iPhone, Google Android,
 BlackBerry, Nokia, Java/J2ME,
 and Windows Mobile. Plusmo will
 become a subsidiary of AT&T
 Interactive.
It's that whole multi-platform coverage (including the most important high-volume Java ME platform, that gets the attention of the mobile industry nowadays. None of this single platform narrow-mindedness. You gotta think big--think multi-platform! And maybe your startup will get bought out...

Making an Enterprise Mobile Triple Play

If you watch today's mobile app companies, you will see a definite trend forming. You don't just pick one mobile platform to address. That wouldn't cover enough devices to make your app have enough impact. For Enterprise mobile apps (like what my-Channels does with their Nirvana mobile app), you want to cover at least 3 of the major smartphone platforms: iPhone, BlackBerry, and Java ME technology.

See:

Enterprise Mobile Triple Play

Here's a quote:

 Nirvana automatically handles
lack of service and provides a
 feature rich API that enables
 mobile application developers
to make the most of real time
 data streams.

 Nirvana supports leading
 mobile technology including
 Apple iPhone, Blackberry and
 J2ME devices.
Makes sense, since that's the way to cover the most popular smartphones and then use Java ME technology to cover the more voluminous mid-pack of the smartphones, which are really feature phones that are starting to creep up with more memory and more powerful CPUs (and tend to all have Java ME). That's the way, uh-huh, uh-huh. I like it, uh-huh, uh-huh.

Hmmm.. what's that word when you say one thing but mean another?

You know, I remember learning back in elementary school that when someone says one thing, but does not believe or follow it himself or herself, that person is called a hypocrite. Yeah, that's the definition: "hyp·o·crite: a person who acts in contradiction to his or her stated beliefs or feelings".

See (thanks to BubbaG for the link):

When you say you're for openness, but not really

Here's a quote:

 "Unauthorized distribution of
 this software harms us just
 like it would any other
 business, even if it's done
 with the best of intentions."
So, let me get this straight--"Unauthorized distribution" of Google's software harms them even if it's done with best intentions... And, what would you call the unauthorized distribution of Sun's Java ME and Java SE software then..? Hmmm... Me thinks a certain Android speaks with forked tongue. Open source applies only when it suits the 'droid, so it seems. How very interesting to see.

Hot Mini AK09 Quad Band Multimedia Camera Java Mobile Phone

This knockoff cell phone is the Hot Mini AK09 Java Mobile Phone and looks suspiciously like a mini iPhone, dud'n it? If you click on the app icon thumbnail image, I'm thinkin' you'll know what I mean.

See:

It's hot and it's mini: AK09

Here's a quote:

 The high definition camera function
 and multimedia player function are
 most recommendable [sic]. You could
take pictures in your exciting moment
with your friends or family, and
enjoy music or video through the
smart phone. It support [sic] the
other strong functions such as GPRS,
 Bluetooth2.0, JAVA and so on.
Well, if it looks like an iPhone and it quacks like an iPhone, it's probably NOT an iPhone and just a $71.30 cell phone with Java ME technology from an Asian country that shall remain nameless. Wink, wink. Nudge, nudge. Say no more...

Go with your gut instinct: New Java ME powered Samsung Instinct HD

The fun part of working on Java ME technology is when stuff you work on shows up at electronics stores (both online and at local retailers like Best Buy) where you can see people paying money for the stuff you helped build. In the past, things like the Amazon Kindle & Kindle 2 (Java ME CDC/PBP), Blu-ray disc players (Java ME CDC/PBP), and now the Samsung Instinct HD (Java ME CDC/MIDP).

See:

Java ME devices that people buy

So when people ask how Java makes money, grab that Kindle/Kindle 2 out of someone's hands, go into someone's living room and hold up that Blu-ray player, and starting Saturday 27Sep2009, grab that Samsung Instinct HD cell phone off the shelf of Best Buy and proclaim, "This! This is how Java makes money!"

Then run like hell because you probably shook loose the anti-theft cable, the alarm is starting to blare like a banshee, and soon that security guard with the crazed look will be coming after you...
