Tipping point: when Doom master John Carmack tries out J2ME Programming

You know you've made it out of the bush leagues and into the major leagues when John Carmack (id master programmer, original designer of Doom & Quake, Gamer Deity, all around famous person in PC Gaming World) tries out J2ME Programming on a cell phone and blogs about it.

See:

John Carmack switches over to J2ME Programming on Cell Phones

Of course in his blog, John really would love to get down and funky past the Java VM into the lower native levels of a cell phone and twiddle bits to make graphics much faster. But, there are ways that are coming that will make J2ME gaming much faster in the Java technology layer, like faster Just-In-Time compilers, multi-core CPUs (with a dedicated Java CPU), and direct framebuffer access from the Java programming layer.

Egads, John! Using memset is so last millennium! C/C++ is part of the Dark Ages of programming. Hope your switch over to the light side continues. You're going to see lots of cool performance enhancements in J2ME technology coming up to speed things up. Looking forward in seeing J2ME Doom 3 Micro Edition on my cell phone soon... :-)
