In addition to Motorola pushing for Linux on their next generation cell phones, Qualcomm is also going the route of breaking away from proprietary OSes on mobile devices and instead looking at an open source solution. See: Linux is fine on the phone. But, pair it up with a Java technology layer (J2ME CDC) and you've got a developer's salivating dream: an API layer that is much more programmable, familiar, standard, and efficient for abstracting a cell phone environment. Qualcomm and Motorola are giving us a glimpse of the future. |
