Learn Japanese while playing this Java ME game

Here's how to multi-task: Learn Japanese Kanji characters while playing this version of Sudoku in Japanese on your Java ME cell phone.

See:

Learn Japanese while playing Java ME Sudoku

Here's a quote:

 M-Kanji-Sudoku can run on
 any device with color display
 which supports J2ME CLDC 1.0
 and MIDP 1.0 - don't be
 scared by acronyms, any mobile
 phone/PDA which offers "Java
support" should be able to run
 the game.
And, of course if you are Japanese and you want to learn English, you can go to YouTube instead and learn things like they do in this video. Repeat after me: "I have a bad case of diarrhea..."

Later on we'll perspire, walking in a Java ME Widget Wonderland

It's a Widget Wonderland with Zumobi's Widgety user interface. In 2nd quarter of 2008, users can use the Java ME version of Zumobi tiles to access, click on, and share content. No more having to remember a long URL to type into a small screen with a limited keypad on your Java ME cell phone.

See:

Zumobi Widgets for Java ME in Q2 2008

Here's a quote:

Aiming to simplify the often tedious
task of accessing mobile Web content,
 Zumobi eschews the traditional mobile
 Web browser. Instead, phones equipped
with the software display up to 16
 Zumobi tiles that enlarge when
 clicked.

When the device user clicks on a tile,
the content is loaded quickly because
it is constantly being updated. The
tiles can be easily changed by users
and shared with others. The interface
is designed to automatically adjust to
 different devices, including those
 using touch screens.
I'm not sure why they would launch a Windows Mobile version before launching a Java ME version, but hey, it's their nickel. It would've made better sense the other way around.

Not the droid you're looking for: Google GMail also happy w/Java ME

Java ME technology detractors love to claim (without justification) that nobody uses Java ME, Java ME sux!, it's too fragmented to be of any use, there are noooo usable Java ME apps that exist today, blah-blah-blah, yadda-yadda-yadda.

You'd think that Java ME would be comparable to Microsoft Bob (for those who remember). Well, the reality check is that companies, like the really big one that starts with the letter "G" are busy creating and evolving Java ME usable applications like GMail Mobile.

See:

Google loves Java ME

Here's a quote:

 Gmail's mobile site is perfectly
 functional, but [Google] offers
 something even better for Java-
 compatible phones. The Gmail Java
 app promises faster performance
than the Web interface, and it
 supports attachments better. To
 try it, visit http://gmail.com/app
and click the big blue Get Started
 Now button.
Java ME is not just alive and well, but growing as a usable and unifying platform for mobile phones, not just for games, but for real-world apps like GMail Mobile.

Who needs droids? :-)

Java ME Cell Phone Users in China Exceed 500 Million

Java ME technology keeps growing and growing. In China the number of cell phone users exceeded 500 million in Oct. 2007. The number of Java ME mobile game players is forecasted to reach over 24.43 million in China alone.

See:

Growth of Java ME continues

Here's a quote:

 As charging system of Mobile
 Java formally started in Sep,
 2003, domestic mobile phone
 game was started up too.
 Several months later, mobile
 phone game users increased
to 2 million. The number of
 users developed even faster
after this, in 2005 it hit
 15 million.
From the early days of Nokia's snake to today's Java ME color-enhanced multi-player games, the reach of Java ME continues to spread like a mutated Bird Flu.... Hmmm... bad analogy. How about like Mono after a highschool dance? Yeah, that's better. :-)

Where's you at? New Java MIDlet tracks you for Facebook

Did you ever want to stalk and hunt down someone because they were foolish enough to put their personal information (hmmm..., I don't know, like their exact location) on a public Internet Social Networking site such as Facebook?

Well, look no more! Java ME technology enables you to hunt down your prey easily. Telenav has launched Whereboutz to track and stalk Facebook dopes who like to expose too much of something they should be keeping private.

See:

Telenav Whereboutz lets you know where

Here's a quote:

This week Telenav launched in the
 United States 'Whereboutz', an
 online and mobile social networking
 service built on the Facebook
 Platform. This Facebook add-on
 allows users to update their
 current location by typing in
 an address and adding notes
about what they are up to.

 Telenav is currently supporting 100
Java phones and three of the
 largest mobile operators in the
 United States.
Java ME technology, not just for smart people anymore. :-)

Holy Hot LiPS Houlihan! Yet another Linux consortium?

LiPS (Linux Phone Standards Forum) is yet another Linux consortium working on a standard for the cell phone industry. Just like Google Android, they have a typical cast of characters that have ganged up, uh, grouped together including Orange, France Telecom, MontaVista, Access, and Don Corleone. OK, maybe not the Don--just seeing if you were paying attention.

Unlike, the Google Android Cosa Nostra, the Hot LiPS cabal has released its first spec.

See:

Hot LiPS Spec.

Here's a quote:

 The market greeted the launch
of LiPS in 2005 with some fanfare
 but nothing like the excitement
 around Google's recent
 announcement of Android. LiPS is
 different from the Open Handset
 Alliance, the group supporting
 Google's Android, because it is
 a specification that allows users
 to create different interoperable
 implementations while Android
 is itself one implementation of
 Linux...
Ah, that's the difference. I was confused there thinking there are a billion and one of these Linux consortia out there. Silly me!

But, there's only one that will make you an offer you can't refuse...

Yaba-daba-do! Bedrock makes Java ME programming easy

Let's ride with the family down the street. Through the courtesy of Fred's two feet. It took me weeks and several times listening to the Flintstone's theme song when I was a kid, before I figured out those exact lyrics.

But, it won't take you too long to figure out that Metismo's Bedrock, which was created to ease the task of programming in Java ME technology, will be a hit among Java ME programmers.

See:

Metismo's Bedrock makes Java ME easy

Here's a quote:

The Bedrock is a set of
 standardised coding abstraction
 layers, processes and utilities
 that help improve the
 development and porting of J2ME
 applications across multiple
 handsets. Using the Bedrock
 across multiple applications
 also reduces the overhead for
 coders/porters to get up to
 speed with new projects.
Fred, Wilma, Barney, and Betty will all be glad that Bedrock is here. Gazoo, not so much. He probably likes Android. :-P :-)

Naughty or very naughty, you can still play this Java ME Christmas game

You better watch out, you better not cry. Java ME technology is coming to town with this new Christmas themed version of Blocker Breaker from Gameloft.

See:

Break Christmas Blocks with Java ME

Here's a quote:

 Gameloft plays Santa Claus on
 your mobile phone with
 Christmas Blocker Breaker
 Deluxe, the Yuletide version
 of its famous brick-breaker
 game!
Well boil me in plum pudding and stick some mistletoe in my ear. This looks like fun! :-)

Tis the season to buy Java ME phones, Fa-la-la-la, la, la-la, la, la

Lots of fun gift ideas from CNet--as long as they involve Java ME technology. Because, ya know, when you give your loved one a gift with Java ME technology, you're saying they deserve the best. ;-)

See:

CNet list of Java ME Gift Ideas for 2007

Here's a quote:

 Sleigh bells aren't the only
 things ringing this holiday
 season. There's been a
 blizzard of cool new cell
 phones and smartphones to
arrive on the scene, and they
 all make wonderful presents.
 After all, aren't the
 holidays about connecting
 with family and friends?
Java ME, demand the best this holiday season.

Boob tubes on Java ME cell phones outship actual boob tubes

Here's an article on how TV-enabled Java ME cell phones are outnumbering the shipments of TV sets in the world.

See:

Multimedia phones outship TV sets

Here's a quote:

 MultiMedia Intelligence... reports
 the worldwide unit shipments of
 multimedia feature-rich mobile
 phones will exceed 300 million
 units in 2008, outnumbering
 shipments of TV sets.
How can that be? I'm not sure everyone is watching Dancing with the Stars on their handsets, but they enjoy the thought that they could if they wanted to.

Vroom, vroom: Internet drives Java ME growth

Just like we saw during the dot com boom, there's something big driving the growth of Java ME technology. What is it? Porn? Well, yes. But, we like to believe it's called the "Internet". You know--that Al Gore invention.

See:

What drives Java ME growth? Porn... uh, no, the Net

Here's a quote:

 "More people will connect
to the Internet via a device
like a cell phone than a PC,"
 he said, noting that most
 mobile devices already use
 Sun's Java software...
Yes, your need for blogs about nothing and posts of dancing baby animations will make money for Java ME. Oh, joy.

Fast Eddie not fast enough

Poor Fast Eddie was not quite fast enough over at Motorola. Even though he promoted the Linux/Java stack on the new generation phones at Motorola, I guess that's not enough and revenues actually do matter.

See:

Show me the money, Fast Eddie

Here's a quote:

 Few Motorola followers were
 shocked by the company's
 announcement Friday that CEO
 Ed Zander would be stepping
 down--they were just
 surprised it didn't happen
 sooner.
Someday, CEOs will be judged by their planning and forethought instead of their quarterly earnings... Yeah, fat chance! Ha! :-)
