Clash of the Titan: Sprint Titan next generation mobile Java platform

There was a lot of good stuff from this year's JavaOne conference (and some not so good stuff with a teensy problem with the Norovirus :-P :-) ). Sprint promoted their Titan specification at JavaOne this year. Cool stuff.

See:

Sprint Titan: Next Gen Java ME technology

Here's a quote:

 To help developers remain involved
 in creating applications for Sprint,
the company is using JavaOne to promote
Titan, its next generation mobile Java
 platform that utilizes tools and
 resources traditionally used for
 desktop program development.
Here is some more info about Titans (as they are defined in Greek Mythology) from Wikipedia:

"The Titans later gave birth to other Titans, notably the children of Hyperion (Helios, Eos, and Selene), the daughters of Coeus (Leto and Asteria), and the sons of Iapetus — Prometheus..."

So, the daughters of the Titan named Coeus, were Leto and Asteria. I guess if you were going to create project code names, you'd have a plethora of ideas by just looking at Greek mythology... or from medical terms. Hmmm... how about calling your next software project, code name: Norovirus? :-)

I've got the power: Java ME tech-enabled Mpowerplayer

Mpowerplayer received the Duke's Choice Award during the JavaOne 2008 conference. Not too shabby!

See:

Mpowerplayer wins award

Here's a quote:

 Using Java technology, Mpowerplayer
expands the audience for mobile games
 to include casual online gamers,
letting them easily find, try, and
 buy mobile games and applications.
Consumers discover and sample a wide
range of content on their PC and then
 transfer their purchases to their
 mobile phone.
Good stuff when unifying Java ME technology (play your mobile content on a PC).

Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Java ME Technology

If you're under 40, you don't know what the initials CSNY stand for. Too bad. Look it up on Wikipedia if you're interested. You know the words, man. C'mon, sing along! Far out...

You who are on the road
Must have [Java ME source] code that you can live byyyyyy
 And so become yourself
Because the past is just a good byyyyyye.
 ...
See:

Neil Young at JavaOne 2008 conference

Here's a quote:

Neil Young and Sun will make an announcement
during the event, and provide a special
demonstration of a new multi-media music
project. Come hear and see what Java
 technology means to Neil Young.

JavaOne and CommunityOne are among the
biggest conferences in the world for free
 and open-source software, attracting... more
than 6 million software developers worldwide,
and powers more than 5.5 billion devices
including mobile phones, smart cards, Blu-ray
players, set-top boxes, PCs, car navigation
 systems and more.

And for those under 40, yes, David Crosby is the biological father of Melissa Etheridge's and Julie Cypher's children. I'm not sure if those kids have long hair and moustaches, but I bet they can sing--and rock! :-)

Using Java ME technology for the greater good

If you think that Java ME technology is used for just fun and games on cell phones, think again. The UN Foundation has released a report on how Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) use cell phones and Java ME technology to help with social activism around the world.

See:

Use Java ME tech for world activism

Here's a quote:

 ...thirty provincial health
 supervisors... were trained in how
 to use EpiSurveyor... The health
 officers then used EpiSurveyor to
 collect management data about
 public health clinics...  In
 Zambia... the supplied PDAs and
 EpiSurveyor software were used by
 health officers to conduct a
 post-measles vaccination campaign
 coverage survey...

 EpiSurveyor incorporates... a
Java-based engine that can run on
 personal digital assistants (PDAs),
 smart phones, and soon, common
 mobile phones.
That's very noble. You don't see much of other technologies with this type of reach and ability to effect the world we live in.
