Cramming is good

Cellity has used Java ME technology in the finest way. It crammed a bunch of functionality into a small, simple app.

See:

Manage your life with Java ME technology

Here's a quote:

 Cellity Communicator (download) is an
e-mail, SMS, and calling client and
service for Java cell phones that's
better than it looks. [It] crams phone
 calls, conference calls, various tiers
of texting, and e-mail into a mobile
application and still manages to look
 simple...
Great! Now if I can only get it to cram paying bills, walking the dog, and filling the car with gas into one MIDlet... :-)

Mobile Java

Hey, look! It's Mobile Java. No, not Mobile Java--Mobile Java!

See:

Mobile Java

Here's a quote:

Imagine waking up to the delicious
taste of a cappuccino instead of
drinking a substance you could use
to patch tires. My friends, I
 introduce the Handpresso.
Cool. I wonder if it will let you make a Grande non-fat, no-whip, six pump, extra-hot, no-foam, double-shot, mochachino in a Venti cup?

How to create a Java ME game

Sometimes I just like to post a YouTube video with a tie-in to Java ME for the sole purpose of enjoying the techno music that goes with it.

See:

How to build your own Java ME game

Bwow, chicka-bwow-wow, bmum, chucka-chucka, bwum-bum...

Norovirus, the new Java ME game for JavaOne 2008 attendees

Looks like this is a new Java ME game for your cell phone that lets you play the Norovirus game and relive the JavaOne 2008 conference. You know, it's the game where you are a Moscone staff member serving up plates of food during this past year's JavaOne 2008 conference. ;-) I'm KIDDING! :-) Sheesh!

See:

Norovirus, Java mobile edition

Here's a quote:

...build an eatery empire by seating,
serving and churning the clients... It
starts out easy, with plenty of time
to dedicate to each customer but as
more and more clients arrive, the pace
can get hectic. Are you open for
 business?
How do you know when you've won? When you've cleared out all the diners from the tables, of course. One way or the other... ;-)

What rhymes with purple?

If you write a poem, there really isn't a word you can rhyme with purple, is there? Well, here's a new Java ME mobile phone from Sony Ericsson in purple: the W380. Nurple? Slurple?

See:

Sony Ericsson Java ME cell phone in purple

Here's a quote:

 Extreme Air Snowboarding, QuadraPop,
and The Sims 2 are the included Java
(J2ME) games, but you can buy more.
Of course you can buy more Java ME games! Buy many, many more! It's how you should roll, homes.

What's that song again? You know the one that goes doo-doo, doo...

If you've ever had a senior moment and just can't remember the title to the song you're hearing, no worries, just use the Shazam iD Java ME app on your cell phone to sample the music and report back the name of that tune.

See:

Java ME Music recognition app

Here's a quote:

Shazam iD is compatible with 22
Java enabled handsets in the UK
and there is a rapid additional
 handset rollout programme planned
 for early next year.
I can name that song in 3 notes. I can name that song in 2 notes. Name that tune!

Tourality: Multiplayer outdoor Java ME cell phone game

If you ever wanted to look as silly as possible with your Java ME tech-enabled cell phone, running around city streets staring intently at your mobile device, like a crazed treasure hunter, no need to try to dress up like Nicolas Cage from the movie, National Treasure. Play Tourality instead!

See:

Mobile Outdoor Game

Here's a quote:

Equipped with a PHONE and GPS (integrated
or as an external Bluetooth device) the
player's task is to reach predefined
geographic spots as fast as possible and
before opponents. While the players are
on their way - by foot, by bike or any
other means they like - their real
position is tracked by the GPS.
And, if you get a bunch of speeding tickets, don't blame Java ME technology. Blame your car or motorcycle for not being fast enough to reach the game goal!

Discover Java ME widget-based discovery

Widgets, gadgets, applets, doo-dads, thing-a-ma-jiggies... It's all the same--little tiny mobile Java ME tech-enabled apps that are customizable, mini-apps, minapps, mapps, m's. Things that show stock quotes, sports scores, weather reports, news snippets, blog summaries, blah, blah, blah, you know the drill, all on your cell phone.

Aricent has their Celltop that they are making available now on Java ME technology (they used to only be on BREW uiOne).

See:

Aricent wisely moves their Celltop to Java ME

Here's a quote:

It provides easy access to data
 services by reducing the obstacle
 of multiple click-throughs.
 Celltop was launched on selected
 Alltel Wireless phones in January
 2007.

Now, Aricent wants to expand the
 app’s availability by making the
 Celltop software development kit
available for both BREW uiOne and
 J2ME handset platforms.
Well if they drop BREW uiOne support, they would save themselves a boatload of troubles for the small number of devices with BREW now. Free advice. :-)

Gish Mobile: Big Pile of Java ME Poo game

This looks like it will be a fun Java ME game. You are a 12 pound pile of poo cruising around your Java ME cell phone, looking throughout the colorful sewers for gold coins to eat, because apparently that's what you do... if you're a 12 pound pile of poo.

See:

Gish Mobile: Big Pile of Poo, Java ME game

It's got catchy music. I give them that. I like that they have a Deathmatch, multi-player mode, where you can do battle controlling your pile of poo against another Java ME technology-enabled pile of poo. It makes sense, in a perverse kind of way... :-)

nVidia APX 2500 demo at JavaOne: Java ME CDC everywhere

Our Java ME CDC/CVM group helped Ken Russell get the nVidia APX 2500 demo running for the JavaOne 2008 conference

See:

Java ME CDC rocks!

Here's a quote:

This stack includes the Connected Device
 Configuration (CDC) and Foundation Profile
(FP), but no graphics stack. At that point
we had a headless Java VM with JNI support.
We also compiled in the java.nio Buffer
 classes from the JSR-239 reference
implementation, because these are used to
hand data down to the OpenGL layer in both
the desktop JSR-231 and mobile JSR-239
 implementations. However, we were not
aiming to run JSR-239 on the device.
Just one of many places where you saw Java ME CDC technology running at this year's JavaOne.

Clash of the Titan: Sprint Titan next generation mobile Java platform

There was a lot of good stuff from this year's JavaOne conference (and some not so good stuff with a teensy problem with the Norovirus :-P :-) ). Sprint promoted their Titan specification at JavaOne this year. Cool stuff.

See:

Sprint Titan: Next Gen Java ME technology

Here's a quote:

 To help developers remain involved
 in creating applications for Sprint,
the company is using JavaOne to promote
Titan, its next generation mobile Java
 platform that utilizes tools and
 resources traditionally used for
 desktop program development.
Here is some more info about Titans (as they are defined in Greek Mythology) from Wikipedia:

"The Titans later gave birth to other Titans, notably the children of Hyperion (Helios, Eos, and Selene), the daughters of Coeus (Leto and Asteria), and the sons of Iapetus — Prometheus..."

So, the daughters of the Titan named Coeus, were Leto and Asteria. I guess if you were going to create project code names, you'd have a plethora of ideas by just looking at Greek mythology... or from medical terms. Hmmm... how about calling your next software project, code name: Norovirus? :-)

I've got the power: Java ME tech-enabled Mpowerplayer

Mpowerplayer received the Duke's Choice Award during the JavaOne 2008 conference. Not too shabby!

See:

Mpowerplayer wins award

Here's a quote:

 Using Java technology, Mpowerplayer
expands the audience for mobile games
 to include casual online gamers,
letting them easily find, try, and
 buy mobile games and applications.
Consumers discover and sample a wide
range of content on their PC and then
 transfer their purchases to their
 mobile phone.
Good stuff when unifying Java ME technology (play your mobile content on a PC).

Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Java ME Technology

If you're under 40, you don't know what the initials CSNY stand for. Too bad. Look it up on Wikipedia if you're interested. You know the words, man. C'mon, sing along! Far out...

You who are on the road
Must have [Java ME source] code that you can live byyyyyy
 And so become yourself
Because the past is just a good byyyyyye.
 ...
See:

Neil Young at JavaOne 2008 conference

Here's a quote:

Neil Young and Sun will make an announcement
during the event, and provide a special
demonstration of a new multi-media music
project. Come hear and see what Java
 technology means to Neil Young.

JavaOne and CommunityOne are among the
biggest conferences in the world for free
 and open-source software, attracting... more
than 6 million software developers worldwide,
and powers more than 5.5 billion devices
including mobile phones, smart cards, Blu-ray
players, set-top boxes, PCs, car navigation
 systems and more.

And for those under 40, yes, David Crosby is the biological father of Melissa Etheridge's and Julie Cypher's children. I'm not sure if those kids have long hair and moustaches, but I bet they can sing--and rock! :-)

Using Java ME technology for the greater good

If you think that Java ME technology is used for just fun and games on cell phones, think again. The UN Foundation has released a report on how Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) use cell phones and Java ME technology to help with social activism around the world.

See:

Use Java ME tech for world activism

Here's a quote:

 ...thirty provincial health
 supervisors... were trained in how
 to use EpiSurveyor... The health
 officers then used EpiSurveyor to
 collect management data about
 public health clinics...  In
 Zambia... the supplied PDAs and
 EpiSurveyor software were used by
 health officers to conduct a
 post-measles vaccination campaign
 coverage survey...

 EpiSurveyor incorporates... a
Java-based engine that can run on
 personal digital assistants (PDAs),
 smart phones, and soon, common
 mobile phones.
That's very noble. You don't see much of other technologies with this type of reach and ability to effect the world we live in.
