GetJar: 3rd annual mobile awards and Java ME tech's answer to AppStore

Yeah, the iPhone iPhreak fanboys have their AppStore. That's nice. But, getjar.com has been around since 2004 as an awesome AppStore for Jave ME apps for cell phones for 4+ years. They recently announced their 3rd annual Mobile Award winners.

See:

GetJar 3rd Annual Mobile Awards

Here's a quote:

 GetJar (www.getjar.com), the
 world's most popular destination
 for downloading mobile
 applications, has announced the
 third annual GetJar Mobile
 Awards: Google Maps, Opera Mini,
 scanR, Twitter and Strands Social
 Player are this year's stars.
Notice how all three Mobile Award winners have Java ME versions. And, notice the winners are not 1990s-style graphics-based games. Some people mistakenly think Java ME technology is just for antiquated games. Bzzzt! Wrong! It's hard to get through some people's skulls that Java ME technology has had getjar.com as its own AppStore delivering to 18 million visitors per month. And, not just games! iPhone is the also-ran in this case.

Times running out for M3DD conf signup

Here's a quote:

 Learning about technologies is great
but at the end of the day what often
makes a project come to life is
connecting with the right people at
the right time. People with the
 expertise and the enthusiasm to
bounce off ideas, to put the pieces
 together, provide help, and to
collaborate with. And why not have a
 little fun along the way?

 The Community Social on Wednesday
evening is an event you won't want to
miss. Eat, drink, and hang out with
 community members, project leaders,
geeks, and industry experts. Have fun,

Survey says... Java ME is the choice

Here's a fun Mobile Developer Survey that Dr. Albert Lia from the Carnegie Mellon CyLab Mobility Research Center has created.

See:

Mobile Developer Survey Project

Here's a quote:

 "Mobile Developer Survey Project"
is a research project by Carnegie
 Mellon CyLab Mobility Research
Center. At the moment our main
 research goal is to understand
 how mobile application developers
 make decisions about both market
 and technical issues. In fact
we'd like to help them providing
 a decision framework to better
 understand key factors to focus
 on and succeed.
And remember when you are filling out the survey that "J2ME"=="Java ME" technology which rocks, so check that box!

Finding iPhone-like GUI on Java ME Nemo

Here's a link I got from Eric Arseneau. Everypoint is coming out with a Java ME app that spiffs up the GUI on Java ME cell phones with cooler graphics. They call it Nemo.

See:

Found Nemo with Java ME tech

Here's a quote:

 Everypoint is launching a mobile
 application platform Monday
 called Nemo, which is intended
 to give Java-based phones
 iPhone-like visual capabilities.
Well, I'm a realist and I know iPhone has some great graphics capabilities. So, it better be some cool stuff they have in order to satiate the cynics. (Say that five times fast...)

Tweets from the womb with Java ME technology

In the "Why didn't I think of that?" category, we have this Java ME app that senses when a baby kicks inside a pregnant mom's belly and sends a SMS text message to a Twitter account each time. Ha! I guess you can't start to Twitter too young with Java ME, eh?

See:

Kick it, baby Java ME tweeter

Here's a quote:

 The Java application receives
 the sensor values and analyzes
them. When a kick event is
 detected, a Twitter message is
posted via the Twitter API. I
 chose to use Twitter because
it is easy to initiate an SMS
 message to any mobile phone
when a kick is detected. It
also acts as a data log that
 can be accessed
 programmatically for
 visualization or archiving.
I wonder what kind of tweet gets posted when the mom is going into labor? "Dad, start the car. I'm going to my first tweetup..."

Free Frosty! Free Frosty! Free Java ME on the iPhone too!

Steve J. is a grinch! There will be no Java ME technology or Flash on the iPhone this Christmas. Bah Humbug!

See:

No Java ME on iPhone this Xmas

Here's a quote:

 Although both Sun and Adobe
 have expressed a desire to
 back the iPhone for nearly
 a year, neither the Flash
 Player nor Java Virtual
 Machine run on the device.
 And it appears that little
 to no progress is being
 made. Sun and Adobe, the
 chief proponents of the
 Java and Flash platforms,
 respectively, repeat what
 they've said all year: that
 they are still working to
 get their software
 platforms running on the
 trendy phone. Apple, for
 its part, did not respond
 to numerous inquiries...
Well, I hope Apple gets a big lump of coal for doing that! :-P No Christmas spirit, I tell ya...

Was a farmer who had a Java ME dog and Bingo was his name-o

B-I-N-G-O
B-I-N-G-O
B-I-N-G-O
And Bingo was his name-o.

It seems that the game Bingo is big, big I tell ya, on all those Java ME tech-enabled cell phones across the pond. What fun! Big money too.

See:

Big money to be had with Java ME... BINGO!

Here's a quote:

 Mfuse strategy is to develop
 Java applications and games
 that are optimized for the
 maximum number of devices,
 functioning across the
 increasing range of handsets,
 each with their own operating
 system.
And that's good to do (maximize number of devices where your mobile app will run with Java ME), since if you've been following the stories, it's not that easy to make any money with just those 99 cents AppStore iPhone apps.

Sprint release Java ME tech-based Titan SDK

Release the Titan! Sprint has released a new Titan SDK for the Java ME CDC/Foundation Profile based mobile platform.

See:

Titan on the loose

Here's a quote:

 [Titan] improves upon the older
 Mobility IDE by enabling
 developers to use standard Java
 desktop development workflows
 and development practices with
 the inclusion of the
 CDC/Foundation Java Virtual
 Machine and OSGi framework for
 new desktop-class applications.
This is good to see Java ME technology growing with more advanced functionality like this on the next generation Sprint cell phones.

JavaFX example: Draggable animation

Here's an example what you can do with JavaFX. I'm hypnotized... Maybe, it's just the techo music playing in the video

See:

JavaFX example: Draggable animation

So, this is just the beginning, since as long as you write to the Common APIs, your JavaFX app will run on Java ME devices--with or without the techno music.

Yet another weird named Java ME company: Fireswirl

Looks like it's a week of weird named Java ME companies. This time Fireswirl is in the news buying up a portion of a Pushmail company, Tysen.

See:

Fireswirl invests in Tysen.

Here's a quote:

Tysen is an integrator of a push
 e-mail ("pushmail") and mobile
 messaging software... powered by
 SEVEN® who... supports more than
 450 mobile devices across all
 the major operating systems
 including Windows Mobile, Brew,
 J2ME...
If it's Java ME Pushmail, it's going to catch some notice.

SurfKitchen cooking up great Java ME content

SurfKitchen won some type of award from EContent Magazine this past week--strange name for a company, stranger award, "named one of the digital content companies that matter most".

See:

Here's a quote:

 SurfKitchen delivers a carrier-class
 Mobile Internet Platform that enables
 mobile operators and their partners
to deploy an on-device experience for
 subscribers to discover, purchase and
use a range of customized mobile

Well as long as they put Java ME in the recipe, it's all good.
