Finally, Cold War ends for Java ME tech on Android
Yes, you've heard me complain about the lack of (official) Java ME technology on the Google Android phones that have been shipping. But, the Cold War is over! Myriad will provide Java ME on the upcoming LG Android phones. Start pre-ordering the LG GW620 Android phones now. (Doesn't hurt that Sun Microsystems will get royalties for each device with Myriad's Java ME stack, ya know) ;-) About damn time! :-) See: Finally, Sun will get royalties from Android Here's a quote: - Myriad chosen as major OMA and J2ME applications provider - New device to be available on both Orange and Rogers networksYay! At least, now it will be worth it developing apps for Android phones--as long as the apps are written in Java ME that is. ;-) |

This is really good news, hope other vendors now will follow and included JavaME support.

Doesn't Aplix also have a similar solution? http://www.aplixcorp.com/en/release/2009/pr07012009om.html

Really nice news....Now android will have millions of application and going to beat IPhone

That doesn't make sense. JME won't be part of Android and since Android already provides an abstraction compatibility layer over the hardware, I hardly think most android supporters will include jme in their mobiles.
So making android apps is j2me is non-sense.

I wonder when is sun millions apps are gonna enter the competition?

Hi Olorin,
You actually meant to post this Google trends URL instead:
http://google.com/trends?q=j2me%2C+java+mobile%2C+google+android&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all&sort=1
Click on the above URL and look closely at Red and Blue lines versus the Orange line, because we stopped using the term J2ME in 2003, so you need to search for multiple names of Java for Mobile and J2ME to be fair. The graph shows a spike in the search term for Google Android, but that will be short-lived and will peter out in short while since developers will see that running a Java ME app on a superset of cell phones that include feature phones, smart phones, Windows Mobile phones, Nokia, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, HTC, and many other brand phones AND Android phones makes perfect sense.
Why run only on Android, when you can write a Java ME app to run on all phones with a Java ME VM? Running on more phones, not less, makes most sense

Great. What does this mean for me and my new Motorola Droid phone? Nothing?

For now (until Myriad or Aplix ports their Java ME VM to the Droid), go to the Google Market on your Droid phone, search for "J2ME" and install the "J2ME Runner" and check out the J2ME Runner Manager after it installs to see all the MIDlets you can run on the Droid and billions of other phones both Android and non-Android:
Or, download and install on your Droid from here:

Java ME on Android rules, native Android OS drools!
