Google's Android: Several beers short of a six-pack
I've been trying to point out the value-prop of Google, Inc. Android has more holes in it than a slice of Jarlsberg cheese. But, it's only after the big yawner of a first round of the Android Developer Challenge back in May, and the recent Google I/O conference, that people like this CNET News reporter (Don Reisinger) are finally realizing the same thing I've been saying all this time... See: Google's Android: A few fries short of a Happy Meal Here's a quote: Android looks like it'll be the second-rate iPhone if Google doesn't up the ante soon. And although I was excited about Android for quite some time, I think it has lost its luster.Welcome to reality, Don. :-) It was all just a bad dream... |

Scott, scott, scott. Tsk, tsk. This is a family channel. Please, no cursing on my blog. Personally, I do not use abusive or foul language in my posts and I don't expect others to.
For those of you following at home, here's Scott's comment, reposted toned down to a PG rating:

It's this kind of petty <poopy> that makes developers like me feel vindicated for switching from Sun/J2ME to Google/Android. When Sun delivers a platform that people want *then* you can start talking <doody>.

Well as a comment, I can point out that Sun has delivered a platform that at least 2.5 billion cell phone users want, since the Java ME platform is found on those 2.5 billion cell phones.
And, as of today by my check, there are still 0 cell phones with Google Android.
That would make the score 2.5 billion to goose egg.

You haven't really bothered following what happened at Google I/O, have you?
And by the way, most of the applications shown in the 50 winners of the Android Challenge could never run on Java ME (compass? accelerometer? presence?).
Java ME is great for games, but anything that needs a tighter integration with the phone is dead in the water because of the fragmentation caused by the JCP and the manufacturers' understandable reluctance to implement optional JRS's.
Wake up, Hinkmond, the mobile world is big enough to like both Java ME *and* Android, for which I find your persistent hatred puzzling and insulting to both your readers and your intelligence.
I really don't understand why you're clinging to Java ME so desperately and irrationally.

Ah, I actually went ahead and read the article you linked to. Even more interesting than the article is the comments (10 as of now): they are all disagreeing with the author.
I thought that Hillary was taking a long time to concede, but she could certainly learn a thing or two from you :-)

Hi Steve,
I'm the one who seems to have a nerve in the Google fanatics out there.
You guys seem to have taken my hook, line and sinker! ;-)
If you've been following my blog you know I like to needle iPhone and Android drones until I get a rise out of them and see them post comments.
You fell into my trap, guys. Bustin' iPhone/Android chops is how I roll.

I guess that's one way to remain relevant, bitch about iPhone/Android since Sun has nothing good to show.
Sad.

Hi Adam,
No b*tching here. I'm simply pointing out what CNET News is reporting. Remember, that I'm not the one who says Android "has lost its luster".
That's a quote from CNET News reporter, Don Reisinger. I'm just providing a link to his news article and yanking the chain a bit. Just a friendly news linking service... :-)

In the meantime, here are 50 questions and answers about Android from Google I/O:

And here's 7 issues and details about Android from Robert Scoble, the Scobleizer:

Yeah, Scoble made the same mistake that the author of the article you linked to: he thinks Android is a phone. Besides, your link is six months old, Scoble has turned around quite a bit since then.
Anyway, I'm sure you can keep supplying anecdotal evidence for single individuals disliking Android, I was just pointing out that you guys are part of a very tiny minority.

Good point. Using anecdotal evidence for the basis of a conclusion is many times not the best practice. However, anecdotal evidence from different unrelated sources at different times (such as the Scoble report and the CNET News article) can many times show a trend forming.
Picking out that trend and what it means is difficult, but can still be accomplished if you take a step back, remove biasness, and see what the independent sources (Scobleizer & CNET News) are trying to say that is in common.
So, anecdotal evidence can be useful at times.
