Growing bigger and badder: Java ME open source phoneME
Bigger and badder: The popularity of phoneME Advanced keeps growing and growing. Roger Brinkley pointed out that markmail.org keeps statistics of our https://phoneme.dev.java.net mail forums since we open sourced Java ME technology way back in aught six. Look at that nice upward trend line! :-) See: Nice upward trend line for phoneME Advanced Good to see the popularity of phoneME Advanced gaining ground. There's strength in our open source strategy around Java ME technology. There's evidence out there to back it up. |

That's really strange... How one would use phoneMe anyway? Our company, for one, is in a bad need for JVM on Windows Mobile and we had contacted Sun to figure out how we can use phoneMe or something similar to make our Java ME application available for our clients on WinMobile communicators. We are even ready to pay. The response we've got was that "phoneMe is a project not a product". So, how anyone is ever going to use it? Are there any real products that are using phoneMe? What do they actually do?

Not strange at all. Lots of companies are using phoneME.
See:
http://www.cs.kuleuven.be/~davy/phoneme/
If your company has more money than time for a Java ME on WinMobile, then you can check with Sun for a commercial engagement for a Java ME (not phoneME) CDC/Personal Profile port.
If your company does not want or have the money to pay for a special port of Java ME CDC/PP to WinMobile, then you can use the open source version of phoneME for WinMobile: http://www.cs.kuleuven.be/~davy/phoneme/
It is being used today, if you look at our phoneME Advanced forum group and see all the companies downloading and using the above.
Example, here's a screenshot of someone's product on phoneME Advanced on WinMobile:

Looks like a cool Java ME App. For more on it, see:

Unfortunately, we were declined on our multiple attempts to do so. We were told that commercial versions of Java ME (that is versions which are unlike phoneME are actually passing TCK) are available only to OEM device vendors and are not available to software vendors.

Hi Roman,
Yes, that part is broken in our Sun Software group. We should be able to sell Java ME licenses to software vendors, not just OEM device vendors.
I'll voice this issue up the chain, since I agree your company should be able to buy the right to distribute a Java ME platform along with your software.
Please contact me off-line so that I can follow-up with you.
