He should've used Java ME tech: Steve Jobs' iPhone gets hacked

It didn't take very long. Someone found a security hole in the iPhone. Stevie-boy should've used Java ME technology. There's nothing like making sure an app is properly signed by an authorized certificate before allowing it to run on your cell phone. Java ME has had that right for about 6 years now. Too bad. IPhone users will learn. It might take them 6 years, possibly shorter if Stevie-boy gets wise and puts Java ME on the next generation of iPhones.

See:

Already, the first iPhone Security Hole

Here's a quote:

The iPhone is becoming a victim
of its own success, he said. “The
irony is that the more popular
 something is, the more insecure
 it becomes, because popularity
paints a large target on its
 back.”

I have been thinking about purchasing an iPhone this upcoming Jan. 2008, when my Verizon Wireless contract ends. But from a lot of comments such as yours similar to what is on digg and other tech news channels, it may be a good idea not too. From your standpoint, what is the best Java ME phone available? Whether it is affiliated with a wireless provider or not. --Todd

You are such an ignoramus!

Hi Todd,

Thanks for the comment!

(BTW, we will ignore the comment posted this morning by an Imperial College student from London, IP address: 146.169.25.113, 113.25.169.146.in-addr.arpa name = wavelan113.doc.ic.ac.uk) :-P Sheesh! Must've hit a nerve with an iPhone phanatic in the UK! College kids! At least he spelled, ignoramus correctly. ;-)

The best Java ME phones (that will be available in Jan 2008) in my opinion are (in order of preference):

  1. HTC Touch
  2. Motorola ROKR/RIZR z6
  3. Nokia N95

Signing has nothing to do with whether or not a platform has security holes!

Java Exploits on the Rise http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1895,2161797,00.asp?kc=EWKNLSTE072407FEA1

It's important to note that while Java SE exploits (QuickTime & Java Web Start related) are on the rise, Java ME technology remains secure. Coincidence? Better model? Better programming & design? You decide. ;-)

The iphone flaw was in the system software. That has no relation to Java ME. There could just as well be flaws in the system software of phones that contain Java ME interpreters. Those also would have no relation to Java ME. The reason that there Java ME technology has had so few exploits compared to Java SE is because it does so little compared to SE and so has a much smaller attack surface. If ME contained as much functionality as SE and was as well integrated with the host platform there would be more opportunity for attack.

Do you bash all your customers like this? Apple is a Java licensee, right?

Hi Mr. 198.145.33.2 (ip2.fa1-0-2.occ.iinet.com),

Apple is a Java SE licensee, not a Java ME licensee... yet. ;-) Soon though, I hope for their sake...

And, I do not bash anyone. I report on Java ME news and comment on the existing press reports that are related to Java ME news. I don't make stuff up. See: Original News Piece on iPhone getting Hacked.

I do what I've done for over 3 years now with this blog, namely comment on "Java Technology, Java ME (J2ME) Technology, and the Wonderful Wireless World". See the title of this blog. Scroll up to the top. :-)

And, if someone like Steve Jobs is making a big mistake, like not licensing Java ME technology for the iPhone, I point it out. It's like if you were at a party and had spinach on your teeth. Lots of people wouldn't say a word to you. I'm the type of person who would say, "Dude, you have spinach on your teeth. You gotta take care of that, man." :-)

if you say you're gonna ignore a comment, stick to it and don't print this persons details there. As if anyone is interested in the ISP/location of this guy!

Hi Thijs,

OK. I have no problem with that. ;-)
