LiPS (Linux Phone Standards Forum) is yet another Linux consortium working on a standard for the cell phone industry. Just like Google Android, they have a typical cast of characters that have ganged up, uh, grouped together including Orange, France Telecom, MontaVista, Access, and Don Corleone. OK, maybe not the Don--just seeing if you were paying attention.
Unlike, the Google Android Cosa Nostra, the Hot LiPS cabal has released its first spec.
The market greeted the launch
of LiPS in 2005 with some fanfare
but nothing like the excitement
around Google's recent
announcement of Android. LiPS is
different from the Open Handset
Alliance, the group supporting
Google's Android, because it is
a specification that allows users
to create different interoperable
implementations while Android
is itself one implementation of
Linux...
Ah, that's the difference. I was confused there thinking there are a billion and one of these Linux consortia out there. Silly me!
But, there's only one that will make you an offer you can't refuse...
