Land Rover S1: Xtreeeeme Java ME cell phone

The new Land Rover S1 is quite an extreme Java ME technology-enabled cell phone. Dust, dirt, shocks, drops? No prahhhh-blem.

See:

Here's a quote:

The Land Rover S1 is also completely
waterproof to a depth of one metre
for up to 30 minutes and is
resistant to extreme pressure of up
 to 400 kgs...

 The current handset will come
 equipped with a 2Mega-Pixel
 waterproof camera with built-in
 flash, built-in GPS, torch light,
FM radio, 2GB memory slot, J2ME Java
 for mobile...
Uhhhh... if your phone is underwater for 30 minutes, hate to tell you this: buuuut... you dead.

Here's a device I would *love* to see:

A child-resistant phone. My 1 year old daughter absolutely loooves to play with mama's and dada's phones, as well as the cordless. Buttons and beeps are great fun. We bought her a toy phone, but it's not nearly as good as the real thing, of course.

Here's the idea: a kid-proof "phone" that runs J2ME apps. No need for much actual phone circuitry - you wouldn't want them to be able to make real calls with it. At most some sort of local, wifi stuff so that you could talk from the other room.

Anything like this out there? I'd pay for it.

Hi David,

No Java ME (and it is a real cell phone) but the Cingular Firefly is pretty kid-proof even though it's been discontinued: http://shop.ebay.com.my/items/_W0QQ_nkwZcingularQ20fireflyQQ_armrsZ1QQ_fromZR40

Just have her borrow Dad's or Mom's phone when she is ready to use Java apps and games. ;-)

That's exactly the opposite of what I want:-) I don't want her to have a phone that can spend money/call people (she's only 1, after all), and I do want her to have a device that can run J2ME apps. It would be fun to write games for her, and would be a great use of J2ME. I don't want her to use mom and dad's expensive phones, either, as they can call people and would be expensive to replace.

Yes, that's a tough one. I don't think there is anything like that on the market right now. But, maybe you could use an LG LX150 and not activate it so it won't make calls, while the phone itself is pretty tough and can be loaded with Java ME apps and games via USB:
