Lots and lots of MIDlet stores, galore!

Kim from MobileRated.com points out (and, rightly so!) in a recent blog comment that there are multiple MIDlet stores out there enabling Java ME developers to go around the carriers and OEMs to deploy their Java ME apps freely to customers on billions of Java ME devices. Cool.

Here's a quote:

 Download free mobile phone games
& apps to your cell phone.
 MobileRated is your free and
 legal provider of Java games,
 puzzles, trivia, productivity
 apps and other phone applications.
Getting free mobile games & apps
 has never been easier.
Of course we all know that we put our free versions of Java apps there but we embed ads or put a time limit on usage or give a link to a more advanced version to buy. We know how this works... Gotta make some scratch at some point. ;-)

Hi,

Being a fan of openness and hackability, I'm not interested in falling under the yoke of Apple's control. However, sometimes you guys, in your zeal to promote J2ME, miss some important points.

For instance, in this case, the "paradox of choice"

In other words, having lots of stores is *not* necessarily better than only having one, that everyone is hooked in to. Actually, it's likely that for some people, only having one is much better.

I'm not really sure whether it's possible to completely resolve this problem in an open environment like J2ME, but it should be considered.

Valid point. However, I wouldn't exactly say in this case of MIDlet stores that having two choices like http://getjar.com and http://mobilerated.com can be considered to be "too many things to choose from".

Contrary to that, having only one choice, like Microsoft Windows for a PC OS, or Apple's AppStore for iPhone apps can be considered too limiting. Where is the good 'ol capitalist way of having consumer choice to drive a free market?

Good things to think about...
