News from JavaOne: Now Verizon does Java ME tech; Who's next, Apple?

In case you missed it at the JavaOne 2009 conference last week, Verizon finally gave in and agreed to allow Java ME apps and games on their wireless network. They finally see the light and agree that there is high value for Java ME on cell phones. Now, we just have to wait until Apple finally has their epiphany on why they should put Java ME on their iPhone and iPod Touch.

See:

Verizon sees the light

Here's a quote:

 However, due to the carrier's
 newly opened stance toward
 networks and applications,
 he said Verizon Wireless will
 embrace Java technology--and
 will provide Java developers
 clear access to Verizon
 Wireless' network and
 customers.
Hallelujah! They see the light! The truth shines bright! :-)

I guess you were not there and havent watched the video. Verizon said that they will open APIs to allow WEB services and applications to get information about the network. They didnt mention J2ME with a single word.
Get over with it, Sun is now backing JavaFX and J2ME is on life support.
Not to mention the fact that ALL j2me sessions on JavaOne were nearly EMPTY while GoogleIO and WWDC were packed. Go figure!

Hey Hey, :-)

I wouldn't be so apocalyptic about Java ME technology yet. Java ME revenues grew at over 20% for Sun these past 12 months (in a down economy). Java ME contributes multiple hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue each year (including this year) to Sun and more next year with Verizon opening up their network with MIDlets that will call those open APIs you point out. And, that ain't hay, Hey! JavaFX so far contributes $0 and Hey, that's a big goose egg, maybe more hopefully next year though, but not even close to $200 million any time soon. So, Hey, cut us a break, since Java ME will be around for a very long while to come.

And I guess you were not there and didn't see that Java ME was in every keynote demo at JavaOne 2009 including the LG TV, on the HTC Diamond show cell phone, on every Blu-ray player, in the new 9" Kindle mentioned and even as being one of the software platforms that Larry Ellison said he wants to support after the switch to Oracle.

So, Hey, you need to look closely at the revenue numbers, and not the fluffy FUD you are trying to wave your hands at. But, hey, it's all good, right?

:-)
