Unleashed: New Moto RAZR2 Linux/Java platform
The new Motorola RAZR2 phones are being released this weekend. Woo-wee! These are the new Linux/Java ME tech-enabled phones I've been watching. Nice combo. See: New Linux/Java ME phone: Next gen RAZR2 Here's a quote: The device runs on a Linux/Java platform with a newly designed user interface that, according to Motorola, allows users to find their contacts faster than before. With Linux and Java ME technology on a phone, you're going to see some great things happen. Strange things, but great... |

Rats! I just replaced my Verizon phone. I opted for one of the cheap ones; if it was possible to run Java FX maybe I can justify a business need to switch again... :-)

Is this a pre-JavaFX phone? When will we (as in developers) begin to see these phones?

Hi Eduardo & Abraham,
No, the Moto RAZR2 is not a pre-JavaFX phone, but instead a very powerful Linux/Java ME technology phone that can handle Java ME CDC if you choose to experiment a little, like use the open source phoneME Advance project at https://phoneme.dev.java.net to build a Linux/ARM/Qt binary to run on the Moto RAZR2.
Lots of interesting stuff is opened up that way when you have a Java ME CDC stack on Linux. And, it's open source... :-)

I didn't mean "pre-JavaFX" but rather open and powerful enough that I can install Java SE (or the future Java core) and then run JavaFX (script) on it. Purely prototypes / demo for now. I suspect the answer is no, but looking forward to the new direction...

Hi Eduardo,
Yes, you're right. The new Moto Linux/Java platforms should be powerful enough to run Java SE and therefore JavaFX Script. Right now, we do have a Linux(MotoEZX)/ARM/Qt port available of Java ME CDC available as open source. If someone were to port Java SE to Linux(Moto)/ARM/Qt, that should be able to run on the Moto RAZR2 also.
The advantage does go to Java ME CDC instead of Java SE now, since we've ported CDC to so many cell phone platforms including Moto's EZX Linux/ARM, which I'm thinking should be very similar to the new MOTOMAGX Linux/ARM that the RAZR2 phone is based on. EZX had their own SDK, but it looks very similar to the MOTOMAGX SDK which is good news for Java ME CDC developers.
