You with the cell phone! Freeze! Put your hands behind your head!

This is pretty nuts. A woman in Washington D.C. was arrested yesterday for talking too loudly on her cell phone. (Oh, by the way, she is also pregnant).

"Freeze! Drop that cell phone! You're under arrest!"

See:

News article

See. If she were using IM or SMS text messaging via a simple J2ME MIDlet instead of talking on her J2ME technology-enabled phone, this would never have happened. ;-)

Why do you think thats 'nuts'? The article doesn't tell you the whole story. You can be arrested for disturbing the peace- how is disturbing the peace by being a loudmouth a**hole on a cellphone any different? Obviously we're missing some details here if the police officer felt it necessary to tackle her to the ground...

I agree. The nuts part is that for some reason two people arguing with each other is very common on city streets and those hundreds of people everyday are not arrested for that. But, put one person on the other end of a cell phone call and for some reason the person on one end of the cell phone stands out and people notice that more than when both parties are present.

I think it's strange that there's a double-standard for disturbing the peace: one volume setting for 2 people talking and another volume setting for 1 person talking.

The volume setting should be the same for both cases and when that volume maximum threshold is crossed whether 2 people in a conversation or 1 person on a cell phone the law should be equally enforced. Was it equally enforce in this case? I'm not sure from the news article. But, I bet it was not since many people enforce that double-standard.

Just my 2 cents :-)

If she was in a movie theater, I totally agree that she was arrested. Nothing nuts about it at all. But, what does this have to do with java?

If she had used a simple J2ME instant messaging MIDlet instead of talking on her cell phone, this would never have happened. ;-)
