SCS2.2.1P2 and RHEL3U5 experience

Rencently customer use SCS2.2.1P2 and RHEL3U5 and encounter some issues, so I use vmware to recreate the environment and record some observation here

• To install SCS2.2.1 p2 you need to install P1 first then P2
• To GEMM's mapp one need to gzip the file before upload to SCS
• To use private NIS in the cluster, I need to copy the /etc/passwd to all compute nodes This has the consequence that user cannot login into each compute nodes

SCS customalization for rhel4

Sun Control Stataion (SCS) SCS can be used to deploy OS and SW packages for redhat, suse and solaris(sparc/x64) system.

SCS's server need to be linux server

SCS is based on apache/tomcat4 and use perl5 and postgresql and java.

As far as the CLI are concern, most codes are based on perl5 and psql and can be modified for new functionalities

The specific verson of OS are hard-coded into the system, so for new OS's release one new to modify the system code in order to support the new version of OS.

I wish that SUN document the step for system to accomendate the new OS releases.

This blog is an attempt to document the steps for include rhel4 as an supported OS

SCS contains the following modules

• Allstart
• Health Monitoring
• Inventory
• LOM
• SW installer
• GEMM

By searching through the /scs/lib/perl5 and /scs/lib/sql that conatins 3ASx86_64 or 3AS
we identify the Distro.pm in /scs/lib/perl5 and need to add rhel4 to as_os , mgmt_build, lom_driver and swinstaller_os tables and modify the 011_load_builds.pl scripts.

It seems that one also need binary for ipmitool for rhel4 and openipmi for the rhel4's kernel-2.6.9-5

I will report the progress as I finish each test

I am able to create rhel4 as allstart distribution and add payload and profile ans actually install a managed host.

It will need to be further tested

vmware/SCS2.2 experience

my experience on using vmware and JDS is very positive.

The followings are some ovservations:

• when doing snapshot, make sure you have enough disk space, otherwise your guest OS will become not usable
• In SCS-2.2, I was able to setup kickstart for RHel3, jumpstart for s9x and s10x using DVD.iso but so far my kickstart work for RH3 but jumpstart fail for s9x or s10x
• as vmware OS start up if you default to PXE boot and one can get the MAC address
• in order for OS to be managed by SCS one require wget to be installed and you need to run hostinstall.pl install script
• SCS require space in iso directory then it will upload to another directory, so you need lots disk space
• upgrading version of SCS2.2 require you remove the SW, there are scripts that help you save the profile and payload but you will need re-create the distribution :-(

SCS2.2 and vmware allstart demo

By using the vmware on my JDS latop I was able to set SCS2.2 29 build and demostrate a allstart of RHel3 install.

Let me summarized what I did:

• create a guest OS using Redhat AS2.1u2 ,using host-only network, add the packages
  • anaconda-runtime
  • perl-DBI
  • perl-DBD-pg
  • tftp-server
  • nfs-utiles
  I also install the dhcp-3.0
• download the scs2.2 29 build, run install/install
• copy the iso files for RHEL3-U3 to /scs/data/allstart/iso
• under allstart setup distribution, create profile
• create a redhat EL3 guest OS, use host-only network, since I donot know how to get the mac address of this guest OS, so I install a very minual OS to get the MAC address
• after I have the MAC address, I setup the client under allstart
• reboot the rhel3 system, at startup I press F12 for netboot, the system will go through the allstart process to rebuild the guest OS
• on the management menu I add the newly installed host as managed host

I now have a whole demo of SC2.2!!!
