Picasso quotes "I am always
doing things I can't do, that's how I get to do them."
First of all, I never thought I could design posters! Thanks
for giving me this exciting opportunity.
What motivated me?
The hard work and the passion of the IEC Open Source Initiative team in
itself was a big motivation to work on these posters. To add to it, my
neighbor, Sreejith, would peep into the
posters while I'm working on them and provide his valuable inputs by
scratching his creative brain. And when you have an immensely talented
media designer, Prakash to help, any task becomes do-able.
How Open Source inspires art?
Well, apart from a few, most of the posters were created using Open source tools. I'd also like to add that an
artist resides in all/most of us and we can't go looking for
sophisticated and expensive tools to satisfy the "creative" urge. So,
Open Source it is! And there is not much difference between the posters
created with open source and licensed tools, right?
Why do we have this Mela?
The concept behind the IEC Open Source Mela is to generate awareness
about open source technologies among IEC folks and to help them
contribute to/incorporate them. The demos during the Mela are
instrumental in sharing/acquiring knowledge of Sun's various open
source products. Talks from the Gurus gave an
insight into open source from a completely different perspective. The panel discussion helped us assert that the concept of open source is indeed beneficial! And
while we were enhancing our Open Source Quotient (OQ), we got to munch on
some sumptuous snacks.
So, we made our presence felt by participating in the numerous contests,
setting up booths, demonstrating your
product, by blogging, or by listening to the talks
and presentations. And let's not limit it to the mela; let's spread the word across....
Though I think the agenda was good enough,
I hope the posters were equally compelling and pulled in large crowds!
The media expertise comes from....

Signing off until the next OS Mela....

The event organizer for the business plan competition, Amit writes the following in his blog on the competition:
The IEC Open Source Mela is just a week away. Apart from being one of the organising team members, I am also in charge of the business plan event- Swatantra Saudagar (two Hindi words, 'Swatantra' meaning 'Freedom' and 'Saudagar' meaning 'Businessman', or a 'Trader').
What is it all about?
Simple: Formulate a business plan using only Free and Open Source software. Your business should stand on Free Software.
Now, you get the idea behind the name ? Oh well, yeah agreed that none of us are Free (Read about मुक्ति or Moksha)
but atleast we can use Free softwares to build world changing business
models. Making a Business plan is one thing and making a profitable
business plan is another. That is the challenge.
Why does Free Software make sense?
The answer is in the question itself. Essentially, almost as a rule, large sums of money can be saved by using legally
Free (as in cost) software to start off a business- a product, a dot
com or a teaching academy. At the beginning, all such ventures have more time than money. This time can be utilized to tinker around with the tools to fit the specific purpose.
