Ran from the General Session over to Java Utopia for more set-up but wanted to blog the OpenSolaris highlights:
John Fowler, EVP Systems Group, Sun Microsystems, announced the release of OpenSolaris 2009.06 operating system. This new release delivers industry-leading features in networking, storage and virtualization, along with significant performance enhancements and developer productivity updates.

The highlights:

Great technology. Great community. Great fun. Go check it out! ;)

Loved coming into Moscone and seeing the huge CommunityOne balloons in white and citron green. :) In the audience at CommunityOne! And now the lights are dimming!

Dave Douglas, Sr. Vice President, Cloud Computing Chief Sutstainabilty Officer at Sun opens CommunityOne with discussion around the Citizen Engineer. Speaking to the tough times economically and socially Dave says in these difficult times, the citizen engineer has never been more important.

So what is the engineer's role in society? In 20th century it was about the individual scientist working in top-down organizations. Today technology and the individual engineer is driven by communities that are participative and open. The citizen engineer is sitting at a crossroads and it's up to you to look at how you are participating in greater society from eco to tecno to social. Take your ideas to your churches, your communities, your schools and make a difference. How can the technology you create today solve a social issue? A ecological problem? An educational challenge?

Speaking of education, Dave brings up 4 of the best and brightest Campus Ambassadors to talk about the work they are doing through OSUM, which currently has 87,000 students participating in all manners of open source projects, clubs, and activities. All four are clearly excited to be hear and are doing amazing things with their individual campus clubs.

I particularly loved what one student said: "We all speak the same language: Open Source"

Calling all Citizen Engineers: What challenge will you be solving today? ;)

We are days away from JavaOne people! For those of us on the Java team, CommunityOne/JavaOne begins on Sunday with set-up :). Our schedules are pretty locked and loaded. I'll be blogging here, twittering here, here, and here, and posting video with @maybeimright here. If you aren't going to JavaOne, follow along with me on anyone of the above channels. If you are going to JavaOne, then please come say Hi! I'll be in Java Utopia most days. I'll be the really tall gal with a latte in one hand and a flip cam in the other. :)
The winners have been announced and I think they are hilarious and creative. Kudos to everyone who took time to submit a video and congratulations to all the winners. We'll see you in a few days in San Francisco! And the winners are:[Read More]

April is Autism Awareness Month. Recent statistics show that 1 in every 150 children will be diagnosed with Autism with some reports putting that number closer to 1 in every 135 children. If you don't know somebody with Autism, you will. And you'll be better off as a person for the experience. Trust me. :)

To learn more about Autism visit the Autism Society of America website.

I went to a baby shower hosted by Maybeimright this weekend and one of her friends brought the best salad I've had in ages. I don't have the official recipe, but it only has four ingredients, so I took a shot at remaking it and it turned out fab. It's Strawberry and Spinach salad and I think you are going to be a fan:

1 bag fresh spinach (not the super! jumbo! costco! size)

1 pint strawberries (washed and sliced)

4 oz. feta (use or skip if you are avoiding dairy)

Girard's Champagne Dressing

Dump the spinach, strawberries, and feta into a bowl. Pour on about 1/4 of the dressing (more or less if you'd like). Mix it up. Enjoy!
