Oddly Appropriate

I've been deluged in mail congratulating me on the Order of Canada thing. Thanks everyone!

One of the odd little email debate threads has been about the t-shirt I'm wearing in the photograph used in the CBC news article. It's my Ralph Steadman/Hunter Thompson shirt that reads "When the going gets Weird" on the front, and "the weird turn pro" on the back. Very appropriate given how crazy the early years were, especially pre-1995. Thanks Mike, Ed, Patrick, Chris, Jon, Craig, Al, Bob, Dave, Joe, Don, Faye, Cindy, Chuck and Sheueling. Just so I can pretend SpamAssassin is what stopped me from congratulating you. Congs!

Congratulations and I was so sad to read that you were having throat surgery. Have you recovered well? I hope so. I have a microphone upload applet for a pronunciation diagnosis demo which I need help with. It's asking for permission to use the microphone. I hope that our mutual alma mater's Sphinx II usage for this demo will convince you to tell me how to sign such uploads so that the difficult upload dialog is easier. Java is clearly the correct solution, but I've been needing so much speed for speech that I'm ashamed I haven't got much past tcl, perl, and php. It's never to late to start, but I am hoping that you will please lend another set of eyeballs to the 16,000 sample per second, 16 bit per sample microphone upload dialog code I have. Would you please take a look at it? If so, please tell me where to send it. Thank you. jps at readsay dot com

P.S. By that I mean, I have been stuck in non-bytecoded C varieties, and my bytecoded language experience is outdated. Please help. Thank you.

That quote about "weird" is beautiful. Is the originator known?
