We've been cranking!

Just in case you hadn't noticed, in the waves of election-mania, Sun has been cranking out a pile of great software releases recently:

And if you haven't yet been totally overwhelmed by Obama-mania articles, you might enjoy the one by Desmond Tutu. Permalink Comments [11]

Lot's of excellent work coming out of Sun! Is OpenSolaris getting to where you'd use it as primary or are you still Mac OS X most of the time?

It's not bad.. but NetBeans C/C++ support is still not usable on Windows for any serious development. That's been a bit of a joke since the beginning of C/C++ support in NetBeans... It probably works ok on 10% of the machines out there, but the ones running Windows don't use any form of GCC for professional development and there is still no support in NetBeans for a proper C/C++ environment on the Windows platform. Even if you install Cygwin, (an ugly hack), trying to compile code that calls and Windows APIs is next to impossible. I've certainly had no luck trying to import code from a VisualStudio project.

Very True. Looking forward to great things with JDK 6u10, and the coming change (um, from JavaFX, not Obama effects).

Good news! But Sun will need to push JavaFX out ASAP or that product will be born too late. Sun will need to show everybody (all developers and internet users) that delay is really worth it. By the way: how is about JavaFX mobile? I am worry that that last one will be out of mobile boat if Sun will delay more like with JavaFX.

A couple of responses:
- Solaris has been my primary laptop OS for almost two years now. I'm not in the "target market" for OS X, and it's been drifting away from usefulness for me for quite a while - but for home stuff, like managing photos, I still have a Mac at home.
- You won't have to wait long for JavaFX!
- JavaFX mobile: we've been putting a lot of energy on getting it all to work on existing handsets.

It's now in the public domain that JavaFX Desktop will be out Dec 2. I wrote it up here:

http://www.psynixis.com/blog/2008/11/07/official-javafx-to-be-released-dec-2/

And also that JaveFX Mobile will be out February 2009.

James - re: your comment about "getting it all to work on existing handsets", does that mean JavaFX Mobile will be a downloadable jar that's distributed with an app, like LWUIT is; or does it mean that it will need firmware upgrades on existing phones to work?

Not trying to sound nasty, but is JDK 6u10 still on the possible horizon on OS X ?;-)

Based on what's just cooking in the JCP, I guess a few of those ME standards might fuel JavaFX Mobile eventually...

Shame you killed Woodstock though.

Thanks for the answer James, I'll have to give OpenSolaris a go!

@bill, believe it or not that quote is from Gerald Ford. http://gregmankiw.blogspot.com/2006/12/ford-sums-up-hayek.html (with link to the transcript of the 1996 GOP convention where he said it). Of course this is an odd place for that quote anyway (though it's great) :)

James, any plans Sun is going to improve Java Swing by features? Seems like now Sun is just in bugfix mode. :-( I am really sick of Ajax hype and truly dislike Silverlight appearance around. Lots of folks loves Swing, but there still are lots of things to be done.

Any plans?
