Looks like Sun is powering Desktoptwo by Sapotek.  I just made a free account.  Very quick and easy.

The desktop itself seems to be a blend of Flash and Java Script.  You also seem to get the option of making a POP email account when you sign up.  I opted not to do so -- I've already got too many accounts to check.

For a beta application it seems pretty mature.  There are all the typical applications you'd expect to see on a traditional desktop: OpenOffice, Adobe Acrobat Reader, even an MP3 player.

I like its "harddrive" function.  You've got a whole file tree, homedirectory, everything.  I'm not sure how large the free account's harddrive is, but I think it's less than 5 GB since that's the first tier or pay-to-play storage.

Definatly going to keep my eye on this.  It wonder what their backend is like hardware-wise.

EDIT: Looks like the free account comes with 1 GB of storage.

I can't find OpenOffice.org. How do you get that?

On the lower-left side of your screen there's a button with your username. I guess this is like the start or launch button.

User name button -> Applications -> Programs -> OpenOffice

I got some pretty bad rendering problems with "Word Processor" in Firefox 3 for Mac. How'd it work for you?

So I thought maybe my SWAN connection was affecting my Desktoptwo session. I shut down my Cisco VPN client and tried again. Then Firefox crashed. Twice.

Maybe it's load, maybe it's a beta issue.

Either way, the OO.org interface needs some work.

Now i found OpenOffice, however I could only save in /tmp

However, it's pretty good for a beta. Speed is not very good but I'm on a 2mbps over in Sweden, Europe so I didn't expect any performance.

Cool, so do you live in Sweden, or are you on TDY?

I tried OO.org again. Large sections of the window weren't viewable. I wanted to try saving in different directories, but the location bar didn't render.

Nevertheless, I'm still impressed. I find that the desktop itself loads instantaneously.

I tryed desktop and it's great for a beta. But there's loads of errors. I cannot acess the Hard Drive or OpenOffice. It's damm annoying cos I can't play mp3, save notepad things or get the PDF Reader! IM isn't working as well. I'm not having such a good time with it. Still OK!

Is desktoptwo still in the air ?? I can't load the url www.desktoptwo.com.

@webnaam: Good question. I can't get to the parent company's website either, sapotek.com. Nothing's listening on port 80 for either domain. Doesn't look good.
