MyFirst Blog-MSI a packaging format...oh no its an installer

I have been working with Open Installer Team for the past one and a half years.
I would like to discuss about MSI the most familiar packaging format in Windows.
Firstly,Am i right in calling MSI as a packaging format?well the answers is "yes" but is it just a packaging format?can i compare packaging formats like RPM,SVR4 with MSI?The answer is a big "no".
An MSI is itself an installer which means it not only contains the packed binary bits but also stores the GUI information(the page sequence,cutom dialog,etc),Registry information about the product(registry keys,values) which are all required for the software maintainance and all the other information required for creating an installer.
So MSI is not just a packaging format but an installer by itself.
In my Next blog i will discuss about how MSI stores these data,how it looks like and what tool can be used to open MSI file.
