JAVA - Jonathan's Astonishing and Visionary Alias
In all my years as a Sun employee, I've never seen so much discussion about a topic both in and outside of the company. It hasn't been a full day since the announcement from Jonathan and I think this decision is already a success. Sure, there are people on both sides of the fence, but it has people talking and it further strengthens the association of Java to Sun Microsystems. I believe Jonathan when he says that awareness creates opportunites for all of our offerings in software, systems and service.

Here's a personal experience that helps me see Jonathan's reasons for making this change.
A couple of months ago, my wife and I went to Toronto to celebrate our anniversary and we took a day tour to Niagara Falls. During a break on the tour, I sat down next to our tour guide. He started talking to me and asked me where I was from and what I do. I told him I work for Sun Microsystems and he immediately responded that he knows Sun because of Java. And he asked me if I work on Java. I told him no, but I work on software projects related to Solaris. But he didn't know Solaris. That wasn't the first time where I've met someone and they immediately associated Sun with Java, but then they don't know about any other Sun brands.

I was just as surprised as everyone else to read Jonathan's blog about changing the SUNW stock ticker to JAVA. But then the more I thought about it, and read about it and talked about it with other co-workers, I am liking it. That's why I say JAVA is Jonathan's Astonishing and Visionary Alias to Sun Microsystems. I'll be looking for it on the NASDAQ ticker next week.

Yahoo! Photos is closing, so move your pictures before 9/20
I want to post my MLB road trip pictures online and found out that Yahoo! Photos is closing, and all users must decide what to do with their pictures before September 20, 2007 at 9am PDT.The options are:
  1. Move your photos: Select from among the photo sharing services offered (Flickr, Shutterfly, Snapfish, and Photobucket) and they will move the photos for you. Note: You can only move your photos to 1 service!
  2. Download: Go to each photo and select “Download” above the photo.
  3. Buy an archive CD

So I'm definitely going to move my photos - I already have my photos on my computer and also backed up on a second hard drive.
Flickr and Photobucket have storage and bandwidth limits on free accounts. Snapfish is run by HP, and as a Sun employee and loyalist, I'm not going there. So I chose Shutterfly, which is also free and unlimited.

I had to create a Shutterfly account, which is no big deal, and was given 15 free 4x6 prints and a free 20-page 8x8 story book. I got a welcome email from Shutterfly and a "Migration started" email within minutes. And two minutes later I got a "Migration completed" email.

I'm impressed by how smooth the transition went. I logged onto my new Shutterfly account and all of my pictures are in place and in the appropriate folders. It also preserved the filenames and descriptions for each album and picture. It didn't preserve Yahoo! specific features like ratings, comments, friends’ lists, or smart albums - not a big deal to me since I didn't use those anyways.

I'm also impressed with the Shutterfly interface. Its really easy to use and looks great and I'm happy with my choice. The only thing I'm upset about is that I think all of my links to my Yahoo! photos are now broken.
hmmph.
