Ultra 10 zones contest Time for some Solaris 10 spare-time fun. I am going to install as many zones as I can on a 512MB Ultra 10 and you, the blog reader, have to guess how many I can get running (sorry, 512MB is all I have at the moment). The prize, this nifty maroon Sun shirt (Ultra 10 not included).
The shirt is brand spanking new, never worn and size Large. While this contest isn't as rewarding as determining the number of licks it takes to get to the center of a tootsie pop, it should be kinda fun. If you read my earlier blog posts, you will will get some hints as to how many I have tried so far.
The rules:
- Only those who post in the comment section (with an email address) can enter. If you don't want your email address on the web, put in something distinctive (keep it clean) in the comment section and refer to it in an email you send directly to me (John.Clingan@Sun.COM) with subject line: Ultra 10.
- Hardware: Ultra 10, 1x300Mhz UltraSPARC IIi CPU, 512MB RAM, 1x4GB drive, 1x8GB drive. RAM will be the limiting factor, although my patience will be a close second with a 300Mhz CPU.
- The global zone will be counted
- Sun employees and their family members can guess, but cannot win the t-shirt (honor system applies)
- If you are an engineer who works on Solaris, don't enter in the comment section, send me an email directly.
- If there is a tie, I will use a random number generator to pick the winner
- How I know if a zone is running: It responds to the inetd.conf "echo" service when I send the "zone me, baby" string.
- All results are final. Hey, this is just for fun. Work with me.
- Time limit: Until I get the spare time to install Solaris 10 build 67 and run the test, hopefully by the end of the week.
I plan to re-run this test on more capable hardware later, but I thought 512MB was a fun start.
