You probably guessed it is not a new animal species (although it might look pretty cool ;-)), but what is it then? Well, this CAT thing is simply an abbreviation that stands for GlassFish Community Acceptance Testing, i.e. a community Beta testing program. Its main goal is to provide GlassFish community with an opportunity to significantly influence the quality of GlassFish as well as to get early feedback on its stability and usability. This FishCAT program for GlassFish v3 will start in about one week.  Joining is as easy as filling out an online application form; applications are accepted until Wed 9/23. More information can be found here or here, it is also recommended to subscribe the quality@glassfish.dev.java.net mailing list. G11n team is working to proved as well some multi-language build, so that some i18n (internationalization) and l10n (localization) testing are possible as well. FishCAT is looking forward to hearing from you! :-)

CTI has just launched a survey to gather feedbacks from users: what you like, don't like, what you want to see, etc... It is a 14 questions survey, ~10mins, straightforward, simple. Even if you are not familiar with CTI, you can still fill it, it helps the CTI guys to know which kind of people (beginners, advanced) are having interest in this tool. Moreover, there are 20 Globalization T-shirts to win !

It's available from the main page of the CTI tool or directly at: http://survey.sunvirtuallab.com/limesurvey/index.php?sid=92616〈=en

See as well http://blogs.sun.com/cti/ or http://blogs.sun.com/cti/entry/cti_tool_survey for more details.

The survey will be closed on Sep, 16th, so still 8 days to go !

Here are some fresh news regarding Sun acquisition by Oracle:

The European Commission has decided to seek more information regarding Oracle's acquisition of Sun Microsystems by conducting a Phase Two inquiry. The U.S. Department of Justice approved Oracle's proposed acquisition of Sun Microsystems without conditions and terminated the waiting period under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Act on August 20, 2009. Sun's stockholders approved the transaction on July 16, 2009. Closing of the transaction is subject to certain conditions, including clearance by the European Commission.

WebStack 1.5 does not have so far any uninstaller.

Testing it regularly, I needed to be able to quickly delete my current version and install the new one, so I kept the command that does that:

rpm -e sun-rrdtool sun-php52-pgsql sun-wsbase sun-php52-suhosin sun-apache22-sed sun-apache22-jk sun-wsadmin-base sun-apache22 sun-mysql51 sun-php52-mysql sun-jcollectd sun-collectd sun-php52-idn sun-php52-xdebug sun-apache22-perl sun-memcached sun-mysql51lib sun-php52 sun-python26 sun-apache22-security2 sun-apache22-fcgid sun-php52-memcache sun-php52-tcpwrap sun-wsadmin sun-php52-apc sun-squid sun-lighttpd14

Just wanted to share it in case some of you need it as well :)

Which is the format German use for dates ? dd MMMM ? No I meant the long date format for Spanish.... And what about the French one !? And are the month name starting with an uppercase letter in Spanish ?

All those little questions can quickly become problematic to answer since there are always some little differences between the languages.

I found this page very helpful: http://www.sql-und-xml.de/server-daten/culture-info/

It is in German, but even for non-German speakers it is quite east to understand. The list of languages is really complete, and there is a lot of information. On little minus, not always the same info is shown for different languages... But that's only a little drawback comparing to how helpful it can be !!!

So to our answer our questions:
- German format for dates: dd.MM.yyyy
- Spanish format for long dates: dddd, dd' de 'MMMM' de 'yyyy
- French format for long dates: dddd d MMMM yyyy
- Spanish month names: lowercase (enero, febrero, marzo, abril, mayo, junio, julio, agosto, septiembre, octubre, noviembre, diciembre)

Easy hum ? :)

The title is quite self-explaining ! KDE is now available on OpenSolaris thanks the hard work of Pavel (you know him from this blog), and Honza Hnatek. More details on http://www.genunix.org/,  from Thur Aug 06 2009:

KDE on OpenSolaris has always been popular - but Suns' decision to go with Gnome left the KDE community to fend for themselves - which they have done with aplomb! :) Today we are pleased to support the OpenSolaris K Desktop Environment Project and make available the Korona live DVD distribution, based on OpenSolaris 2009.06, which boots right into KDE version 4.3 RC3. tryit After downloading, please verify the checksums. Project Korona details are available here. Many thanks to Pavel Heimlich (aka hajma) for his help with getting this content to Genunix.Org!
Please provide your feedback to the project authors. Remember - it's always nice to get a "Thank You" from a stranger.

Sorry for microblogging, I just have to point at Ludo's new entry concerning i18n collation matching rules (making sure a search for "Helene" will find "Hélène") in the just released OpenDS 2.0, since it's something very related to us.

Monday Jul 20, 2009

OpenDS 2.0 is here! The second version of the opensource directory server OpenDS and his brother with paid support Sun OpenDS Standard Edition brings new GUI, separation of user and administration operations, and many new features and performance improvements. From the l10n point of view the most important is the support for RFC 4518 (i18n string matching). The amount of english strings was huge and OpenDS 2.0 is translated into german, french, spanish, japanese and simplified chinese; plus we still keep the partial korean and traditional chinese translations from the previous version. It's important to note that some of the translation was contributed by members of the community through CTI. The Help and error messages are left in english, but if we see an interest there, it may change in the next version.
